H4895 vs IMR4895

My local dealer is able to get IMR4895 in but no luck getting H4895. I see they are close together on the burn rate chart so what is different? My main reason for asking is I am using H4895 for reduced loads and am almost out of it. I am hoping to be able to use IMR4895 in its place. Any input from you guys would be great.

There is a difference. Don't use the same load data for both. Use what is listed for each one. Dan.

Yep I understand there is a difference between the two powders. I am using H4895 for reduced loads but I do not see anything that says IMR4895 can be used that way. I guess I am wondering why one is good and the other is not given how close they are together in burn rate and pressures put up?

Hodgdon gives H4895 reduced load guidance. They do not give it for IMR4895.

It costs money and time to test. If you find some old IMR Data they list various powders that give reduced velocities. IMR 4227, SR 4759 etc. They list IMR 4895, but not quite as reduced as Hodgdon's version. What cartridge are you loading. Maybe some of my older books list I4895 reduced.

Two completely different powders. You’ll need to start all over again and do ladder tests.

I am mostly making reduced loads for a 30-06 right now but would like to do some others like 35 Whelen. Been doing some loading for kids/others who do not need to put up with extra recoil. And to be truthful after a torn retina and four fused vertebrata in the neck I don't need a lot myself. I still like to shoot some of my thumpers a little but try to keep it to a little. I am down to less than 2 pounds of H4895 and would like to find a replacement power that is readily available. Cost is not a driving factor.

I don’t know if green dots available, but I ended up with an 8 pound jug with the old paper cardboard tube. Seems to be a universal powder for low velocity loading for 35 whelen and then everything else.
