made you want to cry?

So here I am fat dumb and happy thinking my 8mm rem mag should spit 220 grain hornadys with 82.5 gr RL-25 at around 2930 or better but NOOOOOOOOOOO, my 1/2 moa load scoots along at a blistering 2750  . I tried like hell to make that 7 a 9 but it just was not going to happen. Back to the drawing board, anyone who shoots a 8mm with a 220 want to share powder of choice info?

Lucky for me I shoot for group size then on a later day shoot for speed, keeps me from being on an emotional roller coaster of highs and lows on the same day.

Bill

I used to have an 8mm Rem Mag that I loved but it since has been sent packing. I should've kept that rifle. Of the many I have sold or traded that is the one I regret the most. It shot the best with 220 grain Gamekings on top of H4831SC and FED 215 Mag primers. I do not remember the charge. Its good to hear someone else has one of these. Definately a contender with the 338 Win Mag I always wished I couldve gotten a 225-240 grain Nosler bullet to shoot in it. Oh well, ancient history now.

As for having the chronograph make my jaw drop for not hitting within 200 fps of what I expected, I can say more than once!

Same here Bill, I really tried to get the 250 AB out of my 338WM up to 2750, but it just wasn't happening.. It is shooting just fine though at 2700... I would imagine RL22 or 25 would get it up there though. Really seems like the 8RM should be capable of 2900-3000 with a 220 though? Wished I had some data for you to try...

Heck, a 220 at 2750 isn't all bad! Just think of it as a long 325WSM!!!!

Sorry, had to say it!

Bill,

Using a chronograph is a bitter sweet experience.
I used RL 25 in the 338 RUM and the accuracy was excellent but the speed just wasn't there. That is why I switched to Retumbo.
It mught be worth a try if H4831 doesn't get you where you want to be.

A chronograph has ruined many a good rifle.

You ain't kidding Mike! Very eye opening a few times!

Good luck Bill, sounds like that 8RM will scream with the right powder!

You are right about that, I sold my 325 WSM when I found out it was getting 2750 fps with 200 gr bullets, I wondered what it would do better than my 35 Whelen with 225's at 2750 fps. The good news was it went towards my 264 WM as a trade in when Corlane's built it and the chronograph said this one was good :)

I never had an 8 Mag, but I was thinking about my .35 Whelen also. I am actually getting a shade less than 2700 fps with the 225 AccuBond (and sub-MOA accuracy too, I might add! :) ), but for less than 60 grains of powder I'd say it's a bargain.

As to the pain a chronograph can inflict: I'd say the majority of that, for me, has been the multiplication of unanswered questions it caused rather than the torrent of comprehension I expected. What I am saying here is that it has raised far more questions than it has answered.

I think my chronograph has experienced enough of my wrath to keep it fairly honest, at least...I shot one of the steel rods that supports the diffuser. Next time it'll probably be *lights out.*

Fotis, what exactly is the 105% ratio. And on a side note, I've found the velocity estimated by Quick load is more accurate than most of the manuals.

Bruce,

Most stick powders can be loaded to as high a load ratio as 114% of case capacity. A 106% load ratio is only mildly compressed, and for many powders, it would not even appear compressed. Spherical powders are less compressable, however, so Fotis has set his parameters to allow for safe loading without severe compression.

I guess I'm just a tad confused about that as I just figured 100% meant the case was full. Does 100% percent mean useable space not total case capacity?

I had a 8mm Rem mag but I used the 200 gr. AccuBond. I was interested in bettering the 300 Weatherby/Win by a bit without going all the way to 338 caliber.
I realy liked the round but got weak and sold it one day to get some other rifle.
My load was: 200 gr Nosler A/B CCI 250 primer RP brass and 87grs. of RL25 with and OAL of 3.6" It gave me a 3084 fps. avg. with individual Vels. of 3083, 3080 and 3088.
Good Luck
Greg

Thanks Greg I have some 200 accubonds and will try that load.

I tried up to 81 gr of RL-22 with the 220 Hornadys yesterday and got a super 100 yard group and a velocity of 2983 with 81 gr's but it seemed a little warm in my rifle, shells did not extract as easy as I like and after full length resizing total case stretch with new brass was .015, .010 after the firing.

Bill
