Help me choose a new cartridge.

That sounds like a good plan Gerry, and yeah, I can't see much wrong with a 24" tube on the Weatherby either, at least not for hunting. Overall, that would be a great way to get into the WBY without spending a ton of money on it.

I suspect you could still fairly easily top 3400 with a 130gr, with the right powders, Gerry. If you do it, shoot me a PM and I'll share some load data with you. I even have some published with velocities from 24" barrels.

7-300wm. It's about 125fps faster than a 7RM and its easy to form plus brass is readily available. A .300wm bushing die will work for sizing and a Hornady 7rm seating die will work for seating bullets.

Now we're in the ball park...... a 7mm Mashburn/7mm Jarrett. That would be a great long range gun with less recoil then the parent cartridge it's formed from, and bridges the gap between the bullet weights of the 260 Remington and the 35 Whelen which is what you were after? At least I thought so, since the 6.5's come in the same weights as a .277.

RG - What the heck was wrong with the first seven .270 Wby rifles? :?:
Galling, Guy. I put 12# of powder through one in a year. I shoot gophers, yotes etc, and a couple hundred rounds a day is pure hell on the barrel. I could have rebarreled, but needed a new Lasermark.

I definitely understand the "need" for a new rifle. Funny how those who don't shoot can't seem to grasp this simple concept.

I have a take off 24" Rem 700 270 Win barrel that is just sitting there doing nothing right now, I might as well just give in and have it put on my magnum Remington action. I know that a lot of guys want a 26" or longer but I doubt a 24" 270 Wby would be a slouch. It would be a pretty inexpensive option right now and could always be replaced later, the only expense other than dies and brass which i would have to buy anyway, it would be a simple rechambering job.

Quite a few years back we rechambered a bunch of those barrels to .270-.264wm. They were pretty fun and quite accurate, especially in the few Sendero barrels we did. You could size them with a 7RM FL die with the expander ball removed and we used Hornady seaters dies. A pretty cheap date if you have a .264wm reamer with removable pilots. The neck is pretty long (2.56" OAL for .270 and 2.5" for .264/7rm) and the throat is fairly long in a standard .270 chamber but they worked pretty well. You could always move the shoulder back and recut the bolt nose if you wanted it to be the correct length. I just figured I wouldn't have to trim brass before it wore out.

Everyone is over looking the 7mm WSM which maybe they should not be! The 7mm WSM may be the cartridge that fills the bill of being slightly faster than the 7mm Rem Mag and being a factory reamer to boot.

Again gerry - 7MM Weatherby or 280 Rem AI with a new barrel or rechamber that 270 Win barrel to a 270 Weatherby Mag - nothing else ! DON"t listen to those other OLD guys ! Cheers RJ

Here ya go: .375 Ruger case, neck it to 7mm, .308, or .338. Mostly because I want to see what hey will do, but don't have the time or money to do it.

Give that Woodycreek some time and I bet you'll see a 7-375 Ruger around here.
.

C'mon, Brian, you know you want to...

Already working to get everything together for the 7mm-375 (7mm LRM) Still gotta find a cheap Rem 700 7mm Rem Mag as a donor. I like my 338-375 Ruger so why not build a 7mm version? The 338 was built off of Jake's reamer and can push 250 SMKs at 2920 and 225 ABs at 3000 FPS. I went with 83gr of 7828ssc for the 250 SMK going 2850. That load makes a big ragged 6 shot hole at 100.

Here is the 338-375 beside a 223 round.

That's my favorite 7mm!

...I would love to have a 7mm WSM, meself, but given the choice of actions, probably not the best fit...

I will dispute that a 7WSM is faster velocity the a 7mm Rem mag all things being equal ! I have chroned at least 6 diff ones and they run all very close ! The 7mm Weatherby will outrun any 7 WSM with the same lenght barrel ! Also those short FAT cases only advantage is a lighter weight shorter action BUT they are NOT as reliable feedders has the longer tapered cases such as the 7 mm Rem & 7 mm Weatherby mags are and that is a fact      JMHO

Cheers :) RJ

If you are using a standard cartridge length, magnum bolt face and magazine, you might as well choose the 7Mmm Rem Mag.

280 AI would be a great choice. A 160 gr AB at 3000 fps would kill anything in NA

I second that statement as well! Less work since there is no fire forming, and I did still see brass around when almost every thing else was gone off the shelves.
