So... I know I'm supposed to be sharpening my skills with my .25-06, looking forward to a couple of mule deer hunts and pronghorn this fall...
But I couldn't help but go shooting the .375 Model 70 lately. No new photos, just the same .375 that I picked up last summer, topped with a mere 2.5x Leupold. Stoked it with some 235 gr Speers, loaded a mite on the warm side for about 2900 fps... An old buddy of mine told me he used to hunt mule deer & elk with the 235's and described the results on game as a "train wreck" meaning that there was a whole lot of destruction in the vitals, and really dead game on the ground, quickly.
Dang. Nice and Tight groups. Huh. Zero at 200, about 8" low at 300 and over 4,000 fpe at the muzzle. Recoil from this well-stocked rifle is not a prolem. Accuracy is great, roughly MOA without hardly trying. The hunters from way back when were right, a fellow really could do it all with a .375 H&H! I could see carrying this thing for mule deer, though I might pop the 1.5-5x on it... Quarter rib doesn't leave room for anything with a big objective lens.
Hmmmm....
