I believe that the 80 gr BT would make a GREAT deer bullet at the lower velocities. I may have to give it a try in my 6mm-225 Contender pistol. 80 gr will do 2800 fps out of it's 14" barrel.
We went out to the range today to shoot my old 22 Win Mag and my son's 17HMR a little. Might carry the 22WMR for turkeys sometime this Spring, so I wanted to make sure it shoot.. It does. Danged thing loves those Remington 33 grain Accutips.
Anyhow, at the end of the day, we did a little competition using my son's 243 and the youth loads. We decided we would shoot 200 yards prone, no sling for group size. Sounds easy enough till you don't have a sling or a pack to rest the rifle on!
It was pretty tricky trying to get good trigger control and to be honest, I wasn't expecting the groups to be as good as they were...
Danged kid almost beat me.. Time for me to step up my game. Next time out I think we'll sling up and try it. He had a good time though. Getting off the bench and back to the ground is alot of fun..
We also tested the loads with my buddies 8 year old. I messed up and didn't get a picture of his target, but he took two shots from the shooting sticks and two shots over a back, rear end unsupported and put them within 4" or so. Recoil was minimal and he enjoyed shooting the BIG 243!
I gotta tell ya, the youth loads are very fun to practice with.
That looks like a pretty good afternoon. Yeah, I'd say that Brandon is knocking at your door, Scotty. You're going to have to work to stay ahead of him.
Great photos of some great range trips Scotty! I'm sure it will all pay off during deer season. That .243 would be perfect if you can find some woodchucks to stalk as well. I used to nail a few, and some other varmints, with the 6mm, when I was stationed in the DC area many years ago.
I particularly like the 80 gr BT for the reduced velocity, though that 90 gr AccuBond did real well. It looks like a mini version of the 260 gr AccuBond recovered from bear last fall! And I'm not at all surprised by all that penetration at modest velocity... Mild velocity and not much of a frontal area often result in a lot of penetration!
Great pics and looks like the boy will be teaching the father a thing or two very soon.
From what I see in the first pic of Brandon you have a few Turkeys at your range.
