I have waited a few weeks to see if inventory for this modified case (270 Win) would be available but no where including Hornady store has them. The Tap is a unique size so can't just go out and buy one to fit the tool without spending $50.00+. Hornady has a backlog for makng a custom one of 4-6 weeks.

Just by some sheer chance does anyone have one of these that they no longer use and would like to sell? or rent :)

I know I can make a modified case with slits down the neck but the bullet often moves when removing from rifle thus invalidating the measurements all too often but if I have to I can resort to this. :)

Thanks
Steve

You can oder the tap from Enco 5/16-36 http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRIT?PART ... NO=3904767 the price is 13.64 there shipping is normally pretty quick. This would let you make your own, and have custom fit to your rifle if you use fire formed brass from the particular rifle. Just make sure is not from a hot load. For the hole size I use a K size drill bit (.2810) Hope this helps

This is great. In the past I was thinking it was metric and almost bought the wrong expensive tap. Since I have never done a tap before (a sheltered child), do I need a handle and lube. Also if I go to home depot, with they usually have that drill bit type.

Thanks man!!! I am ordering the tap right after this post.

I must say I do not know. I keep several large sets of bits on hand that have standard, letter and wire size bits. I guess I should point out that you will need to find a way to hold the case without distorting it will you drill the hole. I have used several home made jigs. I also have a drill press that I use. I guess sometimes I forget some people are more mechanically experienced than others. Something as a child (forced) helping my dad I was exposed to that has both served me and gotten me into situations that has cost me, but education is not always cheap. I really guess it is not fair to say forced, as my brother and I knew it was expected as part of the family to be our contribution when something broke and Dad had to fix it, we were to help. What an education we got auto's, plumbing, wiring, brick laying, concrete work, appliance repair, etc. Sorry just memories.

I forgot to mention that Enco has the drill bit also. Do a search on their site.

Hey YoteSmoker ! Man that was one kind offer! heck I woud have drove up there. I ended up purchasing the tap and drill bit and got it yesterday. ...... but, again, that was one incredibly kind gesture. Thanks!!!

So , I received my tap and drill bit set. The trick is to hold this super straight but I found no problems doing this.

Using a fire-formed case (neck will need to be squeezed slightly to hold bullet)

Task 1 (2 minutes)
Variable Speed drill in my lap and left hand
Case in pliers with tight grib at the web with right hand
Slowly drilled the pilot hole

Task 2 (3 minutes)
Variable Speed drill in my lap and left hand
Case in pliers with tight grib at the web with right hand
Slowly tapped in 3/16s and then reversed out
Slowly tapped in another 3/16s and then reversed out
Slowly tapped in one more last 3/16s and then reversed out

Threaded on my tool -- its a beautiful thing!

The only thing is the last time I called Hornady on performing this work, it was going to cost me $20.00 plus shipping both ways and 2 cases and 4-6 weeks (2 in case they mess up one)

Lets just say it took 10 minutes; those are attorney fees!!!

Thanks all
No more buying the modified cases since I can make my own. (I consider the modified case price a very reasonable and honest price as long as they are in stock - I feel the custom tapping price is not considering I am sure someone built a jig for next to nothing out of scraps to do this work.)

You don't have to squeeze the neck. If the bullet falls out of the neck freely, put the modified case on the holder, drop the bullet into the case, position the modified case in the chamber with the muzzle up. Invert the rifle and let the bullet drop into the lands, drop the keeper rod on the bullet, lock the screw and remove the modified case/bullet.Rick.

I am glad that worked for you. Every time I think I will not need the tap and drill again I or a friend need to make another. I do keep everything in a box and label the cases as to which firearm they belong to. The best part is you are now independent and can do this for any case that might arise and it is firearm specific not one for all..
