My wife and I have been shooting the Military rifle match at the local gun range once a month. My wife does quite well and on the way home Saturday she was telling she wishes she could hunt with her AR. Last night I was looking at the 6.8 Rem. cartridge and it looks close to the 250 Savage in power. Anybody use this cartridge to hunt deer with ? In our area the Blacktail deer are on the small size. Thanks

If you already have the gun, sure, it would work just fine. I would think that if I were starting from scratch, I would probably look for a 6.5 Grendel/.264 LBC, but that's probably splitting a pretty fine hair. (Not having used either one, but read a ton about them.) Just make sure you get a five round magazine (at least in the Peoples Republik of Oregon, no semis with more than five round mag capacity for big game).

The 6.8 Remington will work fine for deer within reasonable distance. I would advise using a premium bullet to ensure good penetration, even on smallish deer.

I think the 6.8mm Rem would work just fine for deer. Nosler offers a 100 gr AB and 85 gr E-Tip in 6.8mm.

JD338

I'd shoot a deer with one... inside 3 bills or so. Though, it seems rather redundant to make a sub-par .277.... seeing as the WCF version already has that base occupied.

When it comes to hunting rifle I'm afraid I do alot thats redundant and don't make much sense. Two 243's,7-08, .308, 6.5x55,7x57,25/06, 270 win,30/06,30/30 and the list goes on. My wife is getting into hunting and she more comfortable with the AR than any rifle we own. She does quite well at the surplus rifle shoot at the local shooting club each month. Thanks for all the advise. I did not know Nosler made and AB and a E Tip in those bullet weights.

If she is shooting a .223 now you could load her some 60 gr Patritions. If not either of the two bullets JD338 listed would be pretty cool in a 6.8 for deer.

Blacktails with a 6.8?

No problem- shoot a decent bullet straight and enjoy the venison!

Brian, you are an evil, evil man. I've been trying to avoid this website like the plague, and I finally succumbed. Dangit! .358 WSSM upper... must have...

I really want one of them 243 WSSM's.. Talk about a fun rifle for the range and just all around shooting... Yeah, I think I just talked myself into one!

On another note, I couldn't find anything wrong with taking deer with the 6.8.. Seems like a sweet little cartridge and in an AR, would be pretty handy I think..

I went with a 25 wssm, the 243's according to the builder is finicky. nothing wrong with a 6.8 for deer, a .277 110 gr AccuBond will do the job.
