I will third or fourth that Black Bear do attack and the need to be bear aware. I've been stalked by Black Bears twice and charged on a third occasion. I froze when charged even though I was armed, another hunter about 5 yards ahead of me charged the bear to give me time to react.

Very saddened to read about the guide, hunter and employee.

I have been charged twice by grizzlies and once by a black bear. Such charges definitely will get your attention. Fortunately, none of the charges resulted in injury to me or my partner. Bluff charge or determined charge, it is virtually impossible to make a decision on such short notice. It is best to be prepared, assuming the worst about the attack. All bears must be treated with respect.
