BUT AT LEAST THIS ONE IS NOT MINE!

It is actually my boy's Stephan's new rifle.
He has killed game like crazy with his 270 Winchester Savage so he wanted another rifle.
Now being his father's son he wanted something totally different. After quite a lengthy deliberation he chose a 325 WSM Savage 16 FSS.
I bought him redding dies today and the rifle should be here by next week. He wants to use the 200 AccuBond for elk. He also declared that he want to reload the Hornady 150 grain at 3300 fps for antelope next year. What a character!

Fotis,

My 325 WSM shoots PTs better than ABs. 200 g. PT and either 64.5 g. H4350 or 64.0 g. of Big Game give me excellent velocities and 0.30 inch groups. The H4350 load has taken moose and elk with authority. Barnes 200 g. TSX and 68.0 g. N560 is almost as accurate. I have had excellent success on groups with the 200 g. Swift A-Frame and with the 220 g. A-Frame, as well. It also shoots the 220 g. Sierra GK very well. However, my load I carry in the field is the 200 g. PT, which works very well.

Like father like son! :p I really don't know why I am going to say this because you likely know a lot more about this whole loading thing than I ever will, but I'll put it out there anyway. I load for a friend who has a Winchester Model 70. His two loads are as follows:

1. 200 gr. Partition loaded to 2.865 OAL 64.5 grs. of IMR4350 with Federal Large Rifle Magnum Primers & Winchester cases
2. 200 gr. AccuBond loaded to 2.900 OAL (slightly different bullet shape as you know, and the long tip) 65.5 grs. of IMR4350 Federal LRM primer & Winchester cases.

Cool thing was is that they both shot about the same group size. The Partitions just under an inch and the Accubonds about 3/4 of an inch or less. They ONLY difference in where they grouped was that the Accubonds were hitting about 1" higher at 100 yards than the Partitions, and THAT WAS IT! Now that is lucky to have two great bullets shooting that close together. With his 2 3/4 inch high sight in with the AccuBond, he is right there with the Partition and can interchange if he wants without any problems what-so-ever. He only has this one rifle now and shoots everything with it to include antelope. (Someone said that overkill still ends up in the freezer? Who is that guy??

Pop,
I forgot to add that the Partitions chronographed at 2812 fps. I don't have the data for his AccuBond as he finally started loading his own stuff after having me do it for him for about 22 years now! He finally saw the light, although it was a dim one and took him a while to see it, and started loading his own. He found out what he's been missing. You are not fully infected with the RADD disease unless you are handloading your own loads to shoot you animals with. It just adds so much more and I am happy to report we now have another member of this famous or infamous group!!

Thank you for the insight guys.

I must say that the 325 WSM is a great cartridge--easy to load for and very accurate in all the rifles I have shot. It is a seriously underrated cartridge that is well suited to North American hunting.

Pop -
Your son made a nice choice in caliber and rifle (I'm sure you didn't have any imput in the decision :p ). He is covering his bases well on calibers to hunt North American game. Not being familiar with Savage rifles, is this a short action? I need to help a non-hunting brother find an affordable rifle for his son to start hunting with and was considering looking at Savage rifles this weekend.

Well I sure hope it shoots like the last few savage rifles I have been around. Those tings shoot great right out of the box. Interesting choice in caliber, being your son I'm kind of suprised it not at least a .375 cal of some sort

Congrats.

The savage is a great accurate and economical rifle. I would put it up against anything out there for out of the box accuracy. Yes this one is a short action.

Sharp rifle for the boy! That is a great choice! Kinda cool to see him pick one of the less famous WSM's. That is a rifle he could hunt forever with and probably never need more! Can't wait to hear how it shoots. Scotty

I was truly trying to talk him into a 300 something but he would have no part of it. He like the oddballs.

I hope he really has fun with that one and lots of luck hunting. Yep, like father like son, a chip off the old block!!

Well I loaded some 150's with H4895 and some 200 PT's with IMR 4350 and RL22 as "feelers"

Excellent rifle and caliber. I had the same gun and it took a passel of porkers with the 180 gr. TSX and would have done a number on elk with the 200 A/Bs if the elk had co-operated. Congrats on a fine rig.

Can't wait to hear how it shoots, but I imagine it will be just like all the other Savages, boringly accurate! Not like my Remington that makes you work for accuracy! Scotty

Fotis,

Congratulations to Stephan on his new 325 WSM. I ma sure it will be a shooter for him. Loaded with either the 200 gr PT or AB, it will cover everything in NA.
Should make for a great speed goat getter too.
