Well, I let this one go and two other bucks, because I have already taken a buck the size of the one in the picture. I saw 7 does, three bucks. The three bucks were a five point, 6 point and what would have been an 8 point, but one side was gone and must have been broken off in a fight. You can take three bucks a year and thee does a day in TN but I already had some meat in the freezer from the first day hunt in Mississippi and I want a big one. So outside of having fun and taking some cool pictures below, I came up empty of horns but was not empty of a good time.

Nice animals..... and some great photos....

Being in the woods is or should be as enjoyable as the hunt itself....

Thanks for sharing....

Thanks guys, I love being out there. Mike, I remember what Patch a friend of mine once said, "Don't ever pass on game the first day of the hunt that you would shoot the last day of the hunt."  If it comes down to the last day it will still have to be bigger thaN the one I shot the first day of the season down here.

Mike,

Good call, let 'em go and let 'em grow.

I have had my best season ever letting 8-9 different bucks go. 1 was a 15-16" inside spread 8 pt.
Been waiting on a couple of really big ones.
Hope my daughter hunts tonight. I had 4 buck in front of me last night. Fun stuff for sure.

Mike,

I named this 7 pt buck Lil' Buddy.
I have passed him no less than a dozen times this season.
My daughter is wanting to get him. She missed him twice and he still come around. I saw him again last night just before dark. Danielle was MIA!

Interesting final shot, glad I was finished my breakfast before viewing it.   I do agree, in letting them grow, The six point I let go has a fine looking set of six points and the horns were so nice and his body stature and the way he held himself and his chest area you can see when he wheeled to run off tells the story about this boy, but one day he will be a real Man (buck) indeed. :)

My friend from WV said thats a white tails way of giving you the finger.
Nice pictures tho. Its good just to be out there.

Mike,
I was put in the same situation after killing a buck the first day here in Tennessee. The second shooter Buck was the same body size, 16" spread, nice 8-point but horns were skinny. Let him go for same reasons you stated. He may be a really nice Buck next year.

Yes, in Tenn you want those chocolate colored heavy massed antlers, they are the old boys.

Great post! I also do the same with my backyard herd. Mostly I concentrate on the older does, however this year I did shoot a buck. Had no other choice, a doe with one or more fawns or one of several bucks. One of my friends hunted hind me the other and saw 6 bucks. One mature. Great pics as usual!!!!!
