Idaho 2012 Elk/Deer Hunt

When I think about the Salmon region, I think about Elmer Keith and Jack O'Connor hunting and writing about the great salmon river herds of elk and whitetail deer back in the 1940 and 1950's.

I hope that someday the wolves are back under management and those regions return to their former hunting glory. It is kind of a parody of the destructiveness of the Liberal effort in this country to see the damage that Liberals spread everywhere they impose their will, whether it is on the economy or the ecosystem.

Awesome pictures and a great hunt! How did that REI 4-season tent hold up to the weather? It's hard to keep them completely dry inside when you come in and out, you cannot help but bring some water in with you! The pictures as always are wonderful. What beautiful country to spend some time in. Too bad you guys did not run into more elk. At least seeing them keeps a guy motivated.

That old Winchester sure looks like it belongs in those pictures Scotty. Very sharp looking rig as is Brian's with that laminate stock. Did you guys wear gaiters with all the wet grass? Thanks for sharing the hunt.

One more quick question. Did you take or have a spare battery for the digital camera? In three days of hunting, mine was completely out of juice.

An experience to be rememberd over and over, as you go back over these fine photos.

Thanks for sharing your hunt with us. Probally, if you had looked back over your shoulder, you could have seen Jack and Elmer settin' on one of the ridges. I have no doubt they still walk thru that country.

Jim

I hate to be the one to tell you this Scotty but when I took my buddy up to get a deer on Friday I saw about 30 deer and about 30 elk. All were spotted from the 4 wheeler.

As a hunting friend of mine once said, "elk are where you find them". Those buggers can cover ten miles in an hour and be in another drainage by the time you realise they are gone.

David, the REI 4 season tent was EXCELLENT, at least by my standards.. Brian complained it was a little tight for the two of us, but I thought it was pretty good. It stayed dry, if you left a vent open at night. If you tried to keep it sealed up, you would get a light coat of condensation in the morning.

The Model 70 was perfect out there. Couldn't be happier with it. I am a little worried about the crack in it, but I will keep my eye on it. Worst case is having McMillan make me an identical copy in their awesome synthetic and keep the wood one stashed away, but right now, I really like the wood stock alot. Very little rust spot under the barrel in the barrel channel when I tore it down and cleaned it. Seems the blueing was done for keeps back then.

Jim, your right about that. It is some of my favorite country to hunt, and it was Bill's as well. He had a huge history with killing lots of elk in that same area, but we can't keep up with the wolves. It is the same area I read about EK and JOC hunting, hope it comes back.

Man, I will have to start zeroing in on those unit Nathan. I will find a little more fruitful elk country till they bounce back.

You aren't kidding about that Charlie. They are some awesome animals. The will to live and thrive is crazy. I think that is what probably makes me so nutty about hunting them.

That's funny, Brian. My buddy Don asked me if I let out a Bigfoot howl after I shot my spike...
