IMR 7828

I was going through some old stuff today and found this article I had saved from the July 1985 issue of American Rifleman.

Apparently in the early 1980's IMR 7828 was "a powder that we have been waiting for". I owned a .264 Win. Mag. at the time and must have saved this article for that purpose. I had previously loaded the .264 Win. Mag. with H870. Never did try the IMR 7828 until a few years ago when I tried IMR 7828ssc in the 270 Win. As I recall, I had good results with it.

Still pretty anemic with a 280. Must have it loaded for auto pressures...I've never really used the powder. Still have a 1/2# from 20 years ago...

I acquired a lb of it through a trade deal, and it was given to me. Couldn't complain. I got several other pistol powders with it. IMR 4227, and A5.

I like 7828 myself. Hasn’t ever been real quirky and in my usage has been within a grain of RL22 data. It’s still a danged good powder in the 7, 300’s and also the 264 as noted. It’s pretty hot stuff in a 243 as well with heavier Bullets.

It,s the powder that put the 7MM mag on the fast track. was only in factory ammo. Not available for Reloading at that time.

My .270s shoot excellent groups with 7828ssc and 150 gr partitions with velocity near 3000 fps.

I had every intention of trying some in my 7 mag, but the H1000 worked so well that I just said "Done". Maybe one of these days curiosity will get the best of me and I'll give it a try.

I'll agree that it's pretty good in the .243....

I have a Rem 700 chambered in 300 Win Mag that has a long throated 26 inch Douglas barrel. With the 180 grain Partition the OAL is 3.6 inches. With IMR 7828 that rifle 3150 FPS and good accuracy.
I also have a tang safety Ruger chambered in 280 Remington. IMR 7828 powder and 160 grain Partitions work very good in that rifle. I just like 7828.

I have used it in 270 Win, 264 Win mag, 6.5x55 and 260 Rem. Worked well with all of them but I like it in the last two the best so far. I use the short cut version mostly and it's a good powder.

I have used IMR7828 in my 7mm WSM with 160 gr PT with excellent results. In fact, I wonder why I haven't focused on this particular load that gives good velocity and superb accuracy. I also used it in the 300 WSM with 200 gr Sierra GK with good results.

My 280 loves IMR 7828 and 154 gr SST's. I found a store several years backs that was getting out of reloading. Bought every pound they had. All the same lot number. Got enough to probably last me the rest of my life.

Pic shows 57 grs but it's really 58.5

That load will definitely work for you. Love the 280, and the load you show will make the cartridge sing for you.

Those "factory" rounds were also "hot". They later backed off of those factory rounds.

I haven't used 7828 in a long time - but it worked great with my old 300 Win Mag & 200 grain bullets - back in the 1980's. That was a tang-safety Ruger M77. Those 200 grain bullets worked out great from that rifle! I had no chronograph then, but remember being impressed with the accuracy from max level loads of 7828 and the 200 grain Sierra SPBT Gamekings.

This is a 5 shot group from my 270 Win, shooting 130 grain E-Tips and 58.5 grains of 7828ssc. It averages 3050 fps and .383”.

That is an excellent load--fine accuracy and sufficient velocity to take about anything you'd ever hunt here is NA. Well, maybe not the Saskatchewan rhino, but about everything else.

I used 7828 in a 25-06 and 7mmRM. It grouped well in each. Only calibers I tried it in and don't have either now. Dan.

I tried 7828SSC in my .280 with 160 gr. Speer Grand Slams. I got the speed but accuracy wasn't all that great. Switched to the long discontinued WMR of which I have a life time supply, got the same velocity and sub MOA groups.
