I have a pound and half of IMR4198 that I am trying to use up, as it is getting old. My loading manual shows loads for 223Rem. using that propellant, but not for 22-250. Anyone know some safe 22-250 loads for IMR4198, using 40, 50, or 55 gr. SP bullets?
Best,
Steven

Steven,

QuickLOAD indicates that 4198 will work without any serious pressure problems with 40, 50 and 55 grain BTs. Respectively, QL projects maximum loads of 31.5, 30 and 29 grains of H4198 using CIP pressures. CIP is more conservative in this instance than is SAAMI, which may be indicated by the fact that H4198 a somewhat faster powder than is recommended by any powder manufacturer for the 22-250. That, in itself, gives me pause. Case fill is not as good as one might like. However, there is no obvious anomaly in the theoretical pressure curve generated.

Sierra does list one series with a 45gr bullet and IMR-4198, 27.6-29.4grs. I looked in a number of manuals and in Loaddata and that was the only listing I found.Rick.

IMR Handloader's Guide recommends 28.5 for the 50 grain bullet at around 3500 fps and 27.5 for the 55 grain pill at 3300 fps.

Thanks for that data, as it does help.
I only looked at my Lyman 47th ed. and that does not show 22-250 loads for IMR4198 except for 45 gr. cast bullets!
Best,
Steven

It looks like IMR 4198 will work but a slower powder which fills the case more would yeild better results.

Yeah, I think you will net much more performance out of Varget, RL15 or similar powder and really make the 22-250 sing. It will work, but once upon a time I had a super accurate load using H322 and the 52gr Speer HP. Well, once I got a chronograph I found out I had a 223AI at best! It worked fine, but they are much more fun at 3800! Scotty

Bingo!

As I originally wrote, I just want to use up the two cans of IMR4198, because they are getting old. I have successful loads with my 22-250, using H380. I also have worked up great loads for my 223Rem. I am using the IMR4198 to target shoot at the range and am curious as to how good, or bad the groups will be.
I put 27.5gr. of IMR4198 into the 22-250, pushing a 40gr. V-Max bullet.
I used 24gr. of IMR4198 in the 223Rem case, which nearly fills the case.
Will report on range work today, if the thunder storms clear up, here in central Florida!
Best,
Steven

Good luck Steven, hope it groups well for ya. If it shoots well, I can't imagine the speed would make any difference. Scotty
