I actually bought the Savage this week end. It should be here next week.
Savage 16 300WSM

I already have a Sako 75 in a 270WSM that I shoot 140AB, so to have a "small" gap I'm thinking 180gn but I have very little experience with 30 cal guns. Numbers don't show much diff between 165 and 180 but numbers are not what hit the elk, the bullets do. Any thoughts?

My son has the Savage Weather Warrior 300WSM and it can shoot anything we put through it.

Since I am usually hunting moose, elk and bear with my 300WSM, I prefer the heavier bullets. However, almost all the load development I've done for others used 165/168 grain bullets. Most were planning to use their rifle for sheep; hence, they wanted lighter bullets to generate higher velocities. I have moved toward 200 grain bullets in the past couple of years in my own rifle.

I loaded 200 AB in my son's 300WSM last year and they shot great. He shot a 6pt Bull last fall that went two steps before falling. I happen to have about 250+ 200AB in the loading room for my 300RUM long-range toy that I could very easily use for the purpose of this gun (elk / bear).

You should be able to generate between 2700 and 2800 fps with 200 grain ABs in your 300WSM. That represents a real punch on game. There is nothing wrong with the 180s, however. I've taken quite a few moose, elk, mule deer and black bears with 180 grain Fail Safe bullets and 180 grain TSX bullets over the years. They never let me down, but I do find excellent accuracy and a real wallop with the 200 grain bullets.

180 accubonds or PT's with RL 22 at 3100 fps. Done

What is barrel length? (without the brake that is)

I am with you Fotis, I believe that the 180gr. in a AB or PT is the right pill for the 300WSM
it will do it all.

Blessings,
Dan

If I were going to punish myself with more recoil than a 30-06, it would only be to shoot 200-grain bullets. As that's not a choice, I vote for the 180s.

My vote is for 180 Accubonds or Partitions.

180 gr. AccuBond 300 WSM - 90-100 yards - one shot dropped on the spot. Hit ribs going in, smacked the bottom of the spine, and broke the off-side shoulder. Was about 2" under the hide on the left shoulder.

With out the gun in my hands - looking on the web site comparing against a non braked WSM, the advertised 23" appears to barrel only not including the brake.

That is good.

Better that those Win BOSS systems. Left my 30-06 with a 21" tube. What a waste

I am kinda new to the 300, but after speaking with the Nosler man while at the factory he mentioned that RL19 was "the" powder for the 300WSM. I took his advice to heart and that is what I worked with in the 300. I am running the 180 AB at 3030 out of my rig. Seems plenty accurate. Haven't had a chance to really push it out further on range, but I have a feeling it will be okay. I did have to seat them kinda short, at least short to me, in order to get them to shoot consistent, but they seem to be doing well.

I tried RL17 and it worked fine as well, but the accuracy wasn't as good as RL19. I can't ever see needing more out of the 300WSM than the 180's give me, but I would like to mess around with the 200 PT's and AB's. I broke in the barrel with RL22 and 200 AB's. Those shot pretty well too, with a mid charge. They ran out around 2750 or so without any real drama.

I did some load work for my buddies M70 EW with the 165 AB's. Tried IMR4350 and Hybrid 100V. 100V shot really well with the AB's and pushed them into the mid 3100 range. The groups don't look the greatest, but it was with my buddy shooting them with a brand new rifle. I think those would be an awesome set up as well.

Good luck.

...165's!!!
...no, wait!!!

...180's!!!
...no, wait!!!

...200's!!!
...no, wait!!!

...165's, or maybe 180's...or 200's...

...out to 500yds., you've got a little more MV, a little less energy/ bullet drop, or a little less MV, a little more energy/ bullet drop, hardly enough of either/ or that any game would notice the difference. I've killed elk w/ 165's & 180's, POI @ 200yds. is insignificant, the 180's drop silghtly more (3-4") on a 500M gong...

"Shoot what happens to be on sale!!!"

...powder-wise, I never could get near the MV's Hodgdon show for Superformance, but RL-17 has chrono'd better MV's than stated, better than anything in the "books"...

Well, yeah, there is that...

:)

Trying to decide if I want to try to fry the barrel in my Ti .270 with Speers, Sierras, or Hornadys... leaning towards Speers since they are a (more) local company... Lewiston, Idaho (hope to move there at some point). But the Sierras do look awful slippery... I wish BTs were a little cheaper. I don't see shooting this at much besides steel, paper, and 'yotes, at least until it wears a .284" barrel.

Shoot what shoots small, groups that is! Let that decide for you. 165, 180, or 200, whatever it likes.

Kurt glad you could find something worth shooting at with that .270 barrel on that thing! :p Now once it becomes a .280 Remington or a .280 AI, the magic really begins! OH I am so prejudice, bias, and anything else towards those two. It's a sickness I know.

...if you're gonna do it, might as well have some fun!!!, I've loaded up both the 90gr. TNT's & Sierra HP's for my buddy's son, so he could use his hunting rifle for shooting pdawgs. Both shot surprisingly well, & "devastating" hardly describes the carnage...

That is kinda how I shop.. Whatever I can get for 2nds.. So far, I am not having much luck with anything I want!

My Sako 75 in 300wsm only likes 180 grain bullets. The 180 AB with RL 19 or 22 works well for me-22 a little better
