Since my Elk hunt last September, I have gotten out of Shape. Since my wife doesn't read this Forum, I can blame her for this. So starting today, Since I am on furlough, I am walking(not jogging) starting out at at least 1 mile per day, to get ready for the trip to Idaho with Greg this year. I think I should mention that this distance will be increased as time goes by, and I may miss a few days between now and the Idaho Elk season. But by getting an earlier start this year, I should be in decent shape by that time. Tater is going to start as well.
When and what do you all do to prepare? When times were better financially, I belonged to a gym and worked out on leg weights on a regular basis before season, starting in or about June. This year it may only be walking and swimming, and using ankle weights.
Did I say I got out of shape?
I meant I got FAT!

I have six steps that are steep and I go up but go backwards down them and count that as one. I go up and then down as I said counting up and going backwards down again and that counts as one and I do that 100 times. I try to keep it around 16 min to do the above then I walk at a fast pace for another five minutes. I do this at least three times a week from Jan through May. Then starting in June I do it four times a week but walk for 30 min afterwards. Starting in August I do it five times a week increasing to 150 times but putting a 30 pound pack on my back and do this until I leave for the mountains in Arizona in Oct.. I have no problem going up and down those mountains and lasting all day.

I plan on starting up a program myself, just waiting to get over my surgery.

Hey Jim, what surgery??? Have I missed something on a thread?

I just bought the "Total Gym". I was sceptical, the wife wanted it, but it really works great. You can do about anything on it.....except walk.

But I was disappointed.....I thought it would come with Chuck Norris pajamas or at least a tee shirt. I mean if Superman wears Chuck Norris pajamas you would think they would through them in for us mear mortals.

Yes the Total gym works well at my house too! it is the best clothes rack my wife ever bought!
I had a weight bench when I was younger that did just that. It waited and waited and waited, but I never came back. I don't know why I always seem to get more benefit from a Gym membership. Before I had my back surgery I taught Tae-Kwon-Do, That Gave me a pretty good work out 4 to 5 nights a week. When I wasn't teaching, I was taking a Judo class, and that was an even harder workout.

Shoulder surgery. Jim is recovering just fine last I talked with him.

When I was in college I could go to the gym anytime I wanted, now its a 25 minute drive to the nearest town with a gym so that isn't happening any more. I found that a stair climber worked really pretty good for some cardio and getting used to climbing. Another thing to remember fellas is that everything you do involves your core, I'm not saying you need to look like Brad Pitt by any means. A pack, rifle, or a massive set or antlers can take a big toll on a person if their back isn't used to it. A few sit ups and back extentions here and there will make a big difference as well.

Most enjoyable way I have found is to get out in the spring and go horn hunting with a day pack. In the summer I'm really bussy on the farm so I just try to watch what I eat and more importantly how much I drink. come early fall I hit the hills for several weekends before the season starts and get used to the thinner air and loose rocks. Us flat landers need some warming up to the hills

Actually umbilical hernia surgery. I had it done on Friday the 13th Feb. Drove myself to the Doc on Monday 2/16 because it was bleeding and nasty looking, it was infected! Bring on the antibiotics.
Went back to the Doc this morning and he gave me a yellow light. I have to go back in 2 weeks.

I caught hell from the Warden Sunday because I was outside shoveling 7" of snow off the front porch and walk way. Shooting my buddy's 300 RUM w/ a brake and no plugs would have been more fun!

Jim the Warden was right, I thought you were smarter than that. I had five years ago double hernia surgery and I will never forget that surgery. My wife jumped all over me for lifting some stuff in my work shop and she was write. I was not smart either but received a quick education from the warden. It was like being in prison with extra guards on duty for two weeks after that re-education session.

I use the Total gym also but only for my upper body as I use the steps I mentioned for my legs and heart conditioning.

my work out program consists of hitting the gym 3 nights per week.
I start with 20 minutes of cardio work. Eliptical or stair stepper. i increase the intensity each week inorder keep the hart rate up.
I rotate free weight work out each day. Chest and back, legs and tricepts, shoulders and tricepts.

I also work as a forester so hill climbing is daily.

When spring hits i will hike hills. I find cloused roads that have a grade of 15% or more and 1mile long or longer. Once you can climb this with no stops add backpack and weight.
