Well the time arrived for me to take Jackson on his first range trip. He has been a little difficult since the arrival of Triple A(His 11mo sister) and I've been holding off because of his listening issues, but I decided to get him out to give it a whirl in hopes that it will be better all the way around because by behaving he will get to shoot more.

The weather was warm, but the wind was less than ideal, 15-20 mph all day. I broke my shooting bench so all we had was an old card table, not very stable to say the least, but we made due.

He shot very well for his first time out. We tried to use his rifle that was given to him for his 6th birthday by his grandpa, but the LOP was just a bit much. It's a Remington Model 6 Rolling block.

So we broke out my first rifle, a Remington 514 bolt action, single shot. Gun was shooting a little high at that distance, even for me, but I couldn't adjust it any lower. It was around 2" high. He did very well. I'm a proud papa.

We had a great time. Here are a few pics from the day.

Very nice day to be out!! Oh the rewards of listening!! I bet he wants to pay attention a lot more now.
That's what we are hoping for!

Man, that brings a tear to my eye. Great pictures, Mike. Good on Jackson! And good on his ol' dad.

That there is a bunch of priceless pictures as he will never forget a minute of it and I am sure his skills will develop over time but his marksmanship is doing pretty darn good, rite now !! Congrats! Papa and Son :)

...nuthin better to learn w/ than one of the good old single shot .22's. Too many kids start out w/ autoloaders & never seem to get past "pray & spray"...

Thanks guys, it's a day I will not soon forget that's for sure. I was very proud of him. He's got a ways to go, but he sure made some serious moves forward today

There was no way I was doing that....................It was singles or the lever, I chose the singles, make them count

Mike, proud of you man!!! Jackson will not forget these moments and a little discipline is good also.
You can not form a better bond then a child and the outdoor range :)!
Thanks for sharing..

Blessings,
Dan

That's great!

Hang in there Dad! Looks like an outstanding time. Hang on to those pictures, some day they will mean a lot to him.

Way to go Jackson! Hope you had fun. Thats some good shooting. CL

Jackson looks pretty pleased with the results! I bet he is a happy kid to go out shooting with his dad. Days like that stay with you for life!

Way to go Sarge! That's the way to get it done! Great shooting by that boy.. It is great to see you pass it along! Won't be long and Jackson will be giving you a run for your money.

I love to see the children enjoying shooting. It is amazing how quickly they master the fine points of riflery and excel.

very nice Mike . I know I've said this 1000 times before , but here it goes again . enjoy these young ones , they grow up fast . I remember taking my little guy out shooting , it seems like only a few years ago . now he is 24 years old ,and has a little boy that will soon be a year old . it sure doesn't seem possible . thanks for sharing .

I waste my time on so much Internet junk - what a pleasure to find your gem of a story, complete with pictures of a young man who has huge potential in lots of ways. Thanks!

Awesome, well done. For a kid who has not been listening, I noticed he was indexing while distracted by dad and the photo op, looks to me he has had some excellent coaching.

That's cool. My oldest daughter is 6 and I can't wait to get her out there. I was thinking of something similar like a Henry Youth rifle.

Nice shootin'!
