Knives????????????

Fotis I really like my Ruana Steelhead model. It has a nice stout blade about 3.5" and is a great knife. I also carry a Uncle Henry Schrade locking folder real similar to the Buck 110 and it too is really nice.

For years I used a Buck Woodsman until I bought a custom knife from Black Forest Blades here in MI.
I have used it for many years but started using a Havalon Piranha. I like the feel and the weight of this knife. I bought a second one last year with the heavier blade and it is much better.

I have one of these as well, and wish I could get more.

Patrick,

Which model do you have?
I have the Folkrod.

I have a prototype one he made - though one of 2, since Dad bought the proto and I bought a twin of it. Black colored buffalo horn, very nice knife. Dad uses his often, and mine sits in my safe. I almost bought another one at a subsequent show, and should have. I think he's still around but makes very few knives.

Ive been using one of these for a couple of years now and have no complaints. I used to have to carry 3-4 knives for cutting up a moose as they dull so quickly. Usually have a couple of guys one sharpening and two cutting. Since I got this knife I haven’t had a dull blade while field dressing.

I just picked up another one today, the Grizzly edition, Pretty good looking knife at under $35 dollars its pretty tough to beat.

The bigger one is called the barracuda and has almost 5” blade and can use saw blades

It might be hard to believe after a post like this but I don’t own any havalon stock :), I’ve just been really pleased with the product and used them on several big animals with great success. The piranha has proven plenty of blade for field dressing but I might pick up one of the barracuda for boning and meat prep.

I've thought about trying the barracuda with a few of the saw blades....that would be a real versatile lightweight setup. I wonder if they're stout enough to saw through a sternum or pelvis?

I take the ribs off from the sternum at the joint and don't mess with the pelvis, the Wyoming saw has a permanent place in my gear so handles all saw work

Check out Birddog forge. Bruce is a friend of the family and makes an awesome blade! I will never be without one of his on a hunt.

This knife replaces a 4 inch Jimmy Lile (D2) knife that I sold after he died. This knife is a Damascus (D3), hand made, steel knife that I bought from Lewis Drake to replace the Lile after Lile died. Blade is Rc 60/65 with Buffalo horn handle.

Fotis- I skinned, gutted and quartered my wifes cow elk this year with a wyoming saw and this knife. Did not even need to sharpen it, though it could use it.

Needless to say, my pack is now 4 pounds lighter from the lack of knives I use to carry. I still have a back up, but there ya go.

Pretty knives are like expensive sunglasses. Always seem to get lost or broken!

I agree. I got that knife with a sheath at the Buck store in Post Falls for less than $20 cause it was a blem. Figured if it got lost or broken, no biggie. Liked it so much, I bought my son the complete kit... the kit weighs less than a folding hunter.

I tried the Havalons. Good stuff there as well, but I did not like the thin blade concept. Not that its a bad design, but my clumsy mutton's could not get use to it.

I do have a custom I carry daily and leave it at home when I go hunting... go figure :)
