I've been using Kroil for about a month now, and ran into something interesting.
I had just pushed out the first application of Sweets.
Still plenty of copper in the bore - I wanted to go to bed and didn't want to leave Sweets in it overnight. So I sent a few dry patches down the bore, then applied a heavy coat of Kroil.
When I got home from work the following day, I ran a dry patch down the bore to remove the Kroil so I could continue with the Sweets...... Well, that patch came out blue! Not the red that I expected. The Kroil had disolved ALL the copper in the bore!!!
No blue streaks on the patch.
Not slimey blue jelly, but the same consistency as the Kroil.
No sign of any red coloring at all.
It started dripping out the muzzle as I pushed the patch in.

So either the sweets started the deteriorization of the copper and the Kroil finished it, or the Kroil did it all by itself.

Have any of you seen this happen?
And is Kroil really safe to leave in the bore for extended periods of time?

Next time I'm going to try cleaning with only Kroil, and let it soak a day to see how the copper fairs. This may be a great thing!!!

Personally I have no clue, but I really want to know.

I would think that a couple dry patches didn't remove all the Sweets but the Kroil penetrating ability lifted the remainder of the Sweets off the barrel. I used Kroil mixed with Shooters Choice at one time as a barrel cleaner.Rick.

I would like to hear more myself Chet. Sounds like your onto something. Scotty

It is my understanding that Kroil will remove copper, howbeit slowly. I've never personally used it, but others that have used it relate such accounts.

My local indoor shooting range swears by the stuff for cleaning just about anything. That's how I found out about it as a "coolant ". That stuff works better than any other oil that I have tried.

As Dr.Mike said slowly... kinda like Hoppes 9..... I mix kroil with shooters choice and every couple of passes I reapply on brush... bronze brush. Works pretty fast.

That makes a lot of sense to me.

Kroil is primairly a pentrating/penetrent/loosening oil. Been around for many yrs, similar to Marvel Mystery oil. It has some chemical ability to get under copper and fowling just fantastically. Does it remove copper, not by chem reaction such as an ammonia based product, but it creeps under it somehow and loosens it drastically..

I have been a fan along time. After a match or a day or two passes before I can give ol betsy a good cleaning, I swab the bore heavily with kroil or marvel and it really makes life a lot easier....

Hey, Rod, good to see you haven't washed away. Kroil is that good, is it? I've never used it, though I've been aware of it for years. How is Kroil for water displacement?

Rod, that is great intel. I might try that the next time out after a range session. Just swab the heck out of the bore with it and see how it penetrates and cleans up the following day or two. Again, thanks for the heads up. I didn't know MMO did the same, but if it does I might try a little of both. Scotty

Doc & Scotty,

To the best of my limited intelligence and since I found kroil to be the best pentrating oil in my technical experience, I came to the conclusion it has to be a great displacer of water & other "stuff" to work the way it does. I have never seen it react adversely with metals. I have seen it evaporate, so its not to be used as a corrision preventative. I came to believe its use long time ago, in a hangar, far, far away when I used to wrench on turbines. The way it loosened the effects of hi temp corrosive gases convinced me.

Since I have always used when going after a nasty bore or cant get to it right away. Works well for me & I find the smell rather alluring. Ya know in the way how hoppes or a 2 stroke exhaust on chilly morning smells? Stirs something primevel, ya know.

Thanks Rod. That is a great review of the stuff. Soon as I can, I plan on grabbing some of it and giving it a whirl. Scotty
