Leading question

I have an itch for a left hand Winchester Model 70 in 30-06.. Already have a Rem700CDL left hand in 30-06 that seems to be coming together after installing a Timney trigger, bedding the action and free floating the barrel..

Question: How is the out of the box accuracy of new production Model 70's? I like the fact that they have a 3 position safety that will lock the bolt closed.. Looking on line Cabelas lists a couple of left hand Winchester Model 70's in30-06.. It may be time to unload a couple handguns and get the Model 70. Thanks for your insights.. Rol

It is well known that I love the Model 70. The accuracy of the new production Model 70s is very good. I have several, and all yield MOA or better out of the box. To be sure, Remington Model 700 fit and finish suffered during recent years. However, if you've been working with your Model 700 and it is coming together, I'm not certain I'd advise you to dump it. I've witnessed some exceptional accuracy with some of the CDLs. And all of the recent production Model 700s that I've worked with could be made to shoot quite well with a modicum of time and attention. Would I advise you to rid yourself of the CDL? Only if you just have to jettison it. Would I advise you to purchase a new production Model 70? Only if you want it and can justify it. My Model 70s are a joy to handle and a pleasure to shoot. However, in moments of lucidity I'm compelled to say that they are no better or no worse than other brands--I just prefer them. I doubt that this reverie helped you in making a decision, but it is drafted in a rare moment of candid reflection.

Thank you Dr. Mike, the Rem 700 will stay in the line up, I have a rather rare, one of about 600 Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44Mag with a factory 6 1/2" barrel in near new condition, along with a Blued 6" Colt Python in nearly new condition that I do not use.. They could go to finance the Model 70. Maybe I should invest in a concentricity gauge to check run out in my loads before going after the Model 70..

Rol_P, have you given the newer Model 70's (say the last few years, being made by FN) a good look?

They're very nicely made rifles. Well worth a look.

You can't buy a new Model 70 in LH because they don't support us lefties anymore by offering one.
I, too have wanted a M70 LH in .270 but I would not dump my M700 BDL to get one. With some work mine shoots a couple of loads under 1/2 MOA consistently.
Now, selling some pistols that are not being used is something else entirely. That I might do.

Seems not long ago we recommended someone here take a hard look at the Montana Rifle Company, as they build a quality spinoff of the Model 70, and it's avail in left hand versions...

Thanks for all the leads fellas... This morning I spoke to Larry Craven @ Montana Rifle Company and was very impressed.. So impressed I called my Local Gun Shop and Jim is placing an order for the American Standard Rifle, (ASR) in 30-06... It will be blue steel and walnut.... Larry said production is 12 weeks out and they being a manufacturer have to sell to an FFL. I will be trading a couple handguns for the rifle...

Now I am like the kid waiting for Christmas..

Congrats on your new ASR, It will be neat to see how it all works out for you, they seem like an excellent buy. When the left hand version comes out later this year I would like one in 264 Win Mag please

The one LH model 70 I would spring for would be a Featherweight 264 Win Mag, that would be nice........
