I would like to make up some light loads for the '06, for WT's and was wondering if
I used either nosler or sierra 125 gr spitzers and used sierras starting load
with imr 4064 at 2800, do you guy's think that would work out ok?

Thanks Guy's

The 125 grain BT or the 125 grain GK will give you a pretty speedy projectile. Recoil will be reduced fairly significantly by using either of these bullets. Not surprisingly, the Sierra manual lists almost an identical list of powders as does the Nosler No. 7 Guide. I do note that the Sierra Manual lists somewhat lower charges than does the Nosler Guide. This is likely due to different lots, or possibly even different techniques of pressure testing in the years between publication of the Sierra Edition V and the current Nosler Guide. The Sierra charge of 47.9 grains of IMR4064 is almost identical to the lowest charge listed in the Nosler Guide (48.0 grains). You would be working well within safe pressure limits by these standards. Out of curiosity, are these loads intended for a new shooter? Or are you planning to use them yourself?

Light recoil loads in the 30/06 have been done a couple of different ways by ammo manuf. One option is light bullet at reasonable speeds (Rem, I think?), the other is a heavy bullet (170g in the case of the Federal Fusion at moderate speed of approx. 2000fps I believe.

The Federal works on the theory of reteaining mass to do the job but trajectory over long range goes out the window. I have used the Fed Fusion due to a shoulder injury and they are definately smooth to shoot but haven't had much success putting them into deer, had 1 x Sambar run off and never be seen again after a hit just in behind the shoulder at close range.

2 x different ways to achieve a similar result, I guess you could pick the range you want to work within and chose a path to explore with reloads?

Cheers,
Waldo

150gr Nosler BT in front of 45.5gr of ramshot Tac powder will give you right around 2550-2600fps for a mild recoiling round that still shoots plenty flat and has enough oomph to open up that ballistic tip out to 300-350 yards.

I would look for a load that gives similar numbers. IMO, the 150gr BT will still open easily out to ~250 yds and have enough SD to penetrate. This is basically a 300Savage which has killed a few piles of deer in its heyday.

The 125 gr will work but the 150 gr BT would be better.

I have had some good range results with 42 grains of the above-mentioned H4895 and the 125 grain BTs in a 30-06. It was surprisingly accurate. Velocity averaged around 2380 fps. I didn't write the OAL I used down, but I think I seated them 1 bullet diameter into the case.

I have not used the bullet/load on any game, however.

Good luck!

That is a real cream puff load right there.
Recoil velocity in an 8.5 lb rifle would be 8.3 and recoil energy would be 9.1 ft lbs.

That's why it was awesome!

Seriously, though, I haven't played with it much. I just can't take it seriously enough, as I instead enjoy punishing myself with Ramshot Hunter and 180s!
