Light done right!

I just picked up a kimber Montana 84 in 308 this afternoon. It was a part of a bunch of guns brought in by a guy's lawyer to sell to pay his legal bills.

It's topped with a leupold VxII ultralight 3-9x33 in talley lightweight mounts.

Weighs right in at 5 lbs 10.5 oz scoped and slung. It doesn't get much lighter than that!

I picked up some 165gr partitions, going to load up some rounds and take it for a walk.

Mine loves 125gr NABs/BTs with Varget and TAC. That one would be a joy to carry!

The 125 AB is on the short list to try in this rifle too. I have been impressed with the 130gr TTSX in 308 in my boys rifle but since I’m headed back out after a cow along the placer tomorrow and there has been a lot of big bear sign in the area, I figured the Partition definately wouldn’t hurt and 165 seems to be a really good comprimise weight in the 308.

They are without a doubt the lightest production gun out there. Only the NULA Model 20 comes close and that's a custom. Phenomenal rifle in a great caliber, good for most of the NA game most sans the big toothy ones that can hunt you back. I was considering that very rifle for my son but my dad turned him into a traditionalist and he wants fine wood on his rifle in 308. He has fine taste too. his top choices are the Super America($2200) and a M70 Supergrade($1200), He will likely end up with a featherweight or CDL, the other too are a bit too much for a young man to be packing around in the woods.

Got it out and shot it today. I gotta say I'm pretty impressed. It is super handy and turn out to be a good shooter.

I swapped that 3-9 ultra light for a 2.5-8 vx3. I figured I could sacrifice the 2 ounces for the better glass. I gave it a once over, skim bedded the action, freed up the mag box, and made sure I wasn't bottoming out any screws, and torqued it all down.

The first loads I tried where 165gr Partition @ 2675fps and 150gr hornady interbond @ 2877fps. I grabbed the Partition load at random and the 150 interbond load has proven good in a few other rifles.

It prints the 165gr Partition at or just under 1" for three shot groups and the 150 interbond almost as well. In a happy coincidence when sighted 2" high at 100 with the 165 part, the interbond load hits 3" high but directly in line left to right. This should make for a nice two load hunting setup without having to change poa.

I'm sure glad I got a good one considering all the hit or miss story's about the montanas out there.

Thebear_78, that looks like a very slick little number and with a VX-3 on it you just made it a little sweeter.
I can't wait until you get her out on a hunt and then we will see what she is capable of doing.

Carried this thing all over today on last day of my moose season. Didn't get to shoot one but what a joy to carry.

Only down side is my wife got an idea of how easy to carry it is. Looks like it might be a scuffle over who gets to use it in the future!

That could be a real problem! Consequently, as you well know, that is why we call it hunting and not shooting.
