Load for 150gr 270 WSM

Hi i have just sold my 7mag and got a Sako 85 270wsm, I have searched but there seems to be very little info on people using the 270wsm with 150gr. Im hoping to get performance as near to the 7mag as i can.

What loads are you guys using? and what velocities are you getting.

You should be able to achieve or even exceed 7RM velocities from your 270WSM using 150gr bullets using slow burning powders like Retumbo, H1000, Win Supreme 780, RL-22, IMR7828 and so on. I use to load 150 Partition Golds for my 270WSM, but no longer have my info as I have gone to the 140AB exclusively (except for 130ET due to CA).

There's data for 130, 140, and 150gr with MagPro in the 270WSM, and you should be able to get something like 3000-3150fps depending on how tight your chamber and bore are. I've used MagPro in my 270Wby, a 243Win, and others, and it's a great powder. Velocity is good and load densities have hovered in the high 90's in terms of percentage, even slightly compressed in some loads. Accuracy has been decent to great, depending on whether or not the rifle liked the particular bullet/powder combination.

Magpro is hands down THE powder for the 270WSM. 70.0gr under a 150gr NBT gave me just over 3100fps. It just couldn't compare to Retumbo for accuracy and consistency though. I shot 69.3gr in my Retumbo loads. Velocity was just under 3000fps.

If you want to duplicate/improve on true 7 Rem mag performance, work up to around 72.5gr of Magpro and a 140grn Nosler AccuBond. BC is .496, same as a 150grn 7mm NBT, and with a velocity of 3250+, it is 220 swift flat. Nosler #6 shows 69.5gr as max, so be cautious. Accurate lists 74.0 grains as max. I was never comfortable over 73.0gr with any of my 270WSM's. Others have had similar results with RL-22. I have found that the 4831's, 4350's and such do not yield the velocies that are capable with this round. Accurate 3100, Ramshot Magunum, and IMR7828ssc are also a good powders to try if you can't get Magpro.

To me, the 270WSM is at its best with the 130-140 grain bullets. Leave the 150 grainers for the 270 Wby if you are trying to match the 7 Rem mag.

Well today i managed to try out my first batch of homeloads.

150gr sst RL22 powder col 2.900" Sako 85 .270wsm

i Tried from 64gr to 66.5gr with the 65.5, 66 and 66.5 being noticeably better grouping. I will try these loads seated in by 10 thou and 20 thou more as soon as i can.

I chrono'd the 64.5gr ones at 3140fps. so should be able to hit 3200fps with the higher loads and there was no signs of pressure, well ok only a tiny flattening of the primer.

So far its looking to be a great rifle and calibre! So far even on its lower load its producing more velocity/engery than my 7mag did with the same weight bullet.

Mildot, it sounds like you have a nice load working for you. Flat primers seem to be a constant with most of the WSM loadings, even at starting charges. If you are that close to 3200 with a 64gr charge, I would chrono each load in 1/2 increments to see if the velocity change, if any, is significant. You might be at or very near a max load in your rifle. I would be hesitant on using the 66+grn charge on a consistent basis without knowing the speed difference.

I use 140gr Accubonds with Retumbo (69.0gr and 71.0C) in my two Tikka T3 LS rifles. Great accuracy and performance on big game.

There were no real signs of pressure at the 66.5gr loads. Slightly flattened primers but not what you would call flattened! if you know what i mean.

May be awhile before i can get to do my next lot of testing! but will be playing with the 3 higher loads and seating the bullets further in. Then depending how accurate they are i will try the same with standard primers instead of the mag ones.

All in all its looking to be a very effective rifle and loads.

mildot one more thing to check before you reliy on the primer for a pressure sign. and what primers are you using to start with cause some mag primers have a harder cup to handle the pressure. i would messure the case head for expansion if it expands .003 that is a danger sign i have been told by a few guys that load beyond the book. and be careful sometimes primers have softer cup from lot to lot. my best load in my 2506 craters the primer when i use the WLR and IS fine when i use CCI's but the load is more accurate with the WLR
