Loading for a 270

This is kind of a follow on to a question I've asked before. There are some new powders out there and then there are the IMR powders that I have and still use. My son has a .270 (bolt action) and I was going to help him work up a good accurate load in 130 grain nosler PT bullet.
Now I know that each gun likes different loads/powders and I may have to try different powders to find that magic combo, BUT......... in all of your collective wisdom and experience, what powder (other than IMR) would you suggest I start with in developing a load for this gun?

Thanks.

Hogdon 4831 (long or short cut) and RL-22 are the classics for the .270 and have similar burn rates. That said, mine prefers H4350 to either of these. I think RL-19 could also be a candidate.

60 or so grains H4831 or RL 22.---work up!

I have found (and this is not written in stone) that if your 270 does not shoot this combo you have a sick rifle.

I've found that my .270 loves H4831 (long or short cut) and with the right load (in my rifle: 57.5 grs for a 130 gr PT, 57 grs for a 140 gr BT/AB, 57.3 grs for a 135 gr Sierra MK) my Remington can consistanly shoot 1/2 MOA. I've heard that RL22 is just as good a powder for the .270 as H4831 but I have yet to try it.

For both the 270 rifles I load for it is H4831sc and either 130 or 140 bullets . . . preferably the 140 AccuBond as I have had excellent accuracy and results with it.

i have been shooting the 270 for awhile and of you want to pu about four shots into a dime then i would go with 54 grains of IMR 4831 with a 130 grain hornady interlock and a cci 250 large rifle magnum. but if you want alot of power and accuracy about 3 shots touching each other then i would go with 58.5 grains of IMR 4831 with a 130 grain hornady interlock and a 250 large rifle magnum primer. But this year i use 55 grains of IMR 4831 with a 140 grain btsp from hornady and a 250 large rifle magnum primer, on my elk that was standing at 450 yards and i hit him above the front shoulder and he just droped in his tracks, and i shot a deer with the same load but it was too much power for it. but if you need anymore loads( woodchucks, marmots, coyotes, ect) then just email at cycleboy91@hotmail.com

One more vote for H4831sc, works great for me. Outstanding groups & meters well.

RL22 and h4831 have been the most accurate powders for the 270's I have loaded for, however RL22 has always given me better velocities.

Can I ask why you want to get way from IMR? Have you incoutered problems, or are you just educating yourself on "newer" powders?

I personally love RL22 for my .25-06.

If a 270 Win. won't shoot good with H4831 or RL22 i take a hard look at the barrel.
60 or 61 grs. of H4831 behind a 130gr. bullet usually works good, very good.
