Hi POP,

I am new to reloading (and this forum). I just read an article in Handloading magazine on Reduced loads. I am shooting a .300 WSM and am interested in making reduced loads. My question is would I use magnum primers for these reduced loads or do I need to switch to large rifle primers?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum sir!

Either would work well...... Use what you have on hand.

Enjoy!
same question the 300 Ultra Mag Knocks my fillings out at the bench, and i dont have a lead sled. I really enjoy paper punching, i know its not the best caliber for that but its my big gun. Sinse they sell reduced loads i will make my own. My problem is primers we cant get them up here in north dakota. not magnums anyway, so sinse im using less powder can i use a lesser primer. Or do you have to use a magnum to keep from getting hangfires?

Welcome to the forum.

In the big cases like the RUM, you need to stay with the magnum primers.

For some information on reduced loads, look at this link:

Also, the newest Hodgdon Annual Manual has a nice article with additional information on reduced loads using both Hodgdon and IMR powders. There may or may not be information on the RUM, but I know there is information on the 300WSM, though it may not be much.

At one time, Speer used to publish reduced loads in their manual, so if you have the Speer guide, you might check that source as well.

You might get away with standard primers for reduced loads IF you stuck with stick powders, but don't try it with a ball powder. :p
