Long Distance Sheep & Goat rifle

The 270 is great no doubt. I actually shot my 270 donor gun destined for the 35 Whelen project it shot all right with 1 box of Winchester 150 gr Powerpoint factory loads but not spectacular. I do know one thing, I'm not so willing to be pounded by recoil anymore other than my 375 Ruger bear stopping gun and don't have much desire to have the hard kicking magnums bigger than a 7mm RM for example. The various 300's and 338's don't have much appeal anymore when a smaller gun can be so effective.

Agree gerry, I sold my 375 H & H as I did not need it anymore. Recoil in the field never bothers me but on the bench it was a might noticeable
I know that a lot of folks call the 270win the 06's baby sister but that is okay cause the 35 Whelen that I am to soon to get is its big brother
It is all about shot placement and confidence!!

Blessings,
Dan

Dan,

I may not let that Whelen leave Dawson Creek. If it shoots as good as it looks, it may have to stay here.

That is okay Mike what do you charge for board & room? Cause if it ain't going then I guess I am staying

Blessings,
Dan

I always kinda thought the 270WSM with a screamer in the tube would be a sweet sheep/goat rifle. If I were to go sheep hunting right now, I would stick with the 150 PT at 3150 and call it good. I can make hits out to 600 easy enough on a still day and it isn't a bear to carry. I would think anything that smashes a WT deer would work well as a sheep rifle, with rifle weight being more of a concern than trajectory..

Never thought of the 200 AB for light stuff Gerry. Good point.

You guys are making me feel bad. My wife returned and now I have to start eating properly. While she was gone, I could eat a cardiologist's nightmare, knowing that I'd have to shed a bit once she was home. Already begun the daily walking routine, and I even eat salads. Ah, maybe I'll be in shape by time for fall hunting. Maybe I'll get a new river boat for my birthday. Maybe I'll bowl a perfect game. Maybe...

I didn't fight my way to the top of the food chain so I could eat vegetables!!!!!

Hopefully I will someday draw a sheep or goat tag. That would be awesome!

What do you sheep & goat hunters think about my .25-06 for the job?

I keep it sighted in at 300 yards with the 6x Leupold, a very clear and bright scope. Ammo is typically one of the 115 gr bullets at around 3200 fps via Retumbo powder. Accuracy is sub MOA, but hardly in the match-rifle class. I've got good loads for both the 115 Nosler Partition and the 115 Nosler Ballistic tip.

It's become a favorite mule deer rifle, but I've never tried it on anything hardier.

Thanks, Guy

Guy as others have said, sheep aren't too tough to kill. My buddy shot his Bighorn ram at about 150 yards with a Ruger #1B in 6mm Remington and 100 gr. Partition. One shot behind the shoulder and he dropped on the spot. My other buddy used his 30-06 with 165 gr. Partition on his mountain goat, and it worked well. He shot his goat twice. First time behind the shoulders in the lungs at about 250 yards, after I had been telling him and telling him, shoot him in the shoulders! He shot him a second time as he was still standing after the first shot, and hit him in the shoulders and he dropped.

When I was goat hunting this year I carried my wife's 25-06 MTN Rifle with a fixed 6x Leupold scope and 120 gr. Partitions. I had full confidence in the rifle and the bullet, if I could find a darn goat! That rifle is so light and packs so easily. When I went back to the lakes on horses with a couple guys and the horses would be packing us and our gear in for the most part, I took both the 25-06 and my son's 300 WSM Model 70 Extreme Weather SS. I was trying to prevent
old Murphy from jumping in a ruining things. I figured one is none and two is one.

Guy if the 270 and 130's are the cats meow, the 25-06 and 110 to 120's should be purrfect also! I'll even give it to old SJB that his 270 WSM will probably be "okay". :?

"My buddy shot his Bighorn ram at about 150 yards with a Ruger #1B in 6mm Remington and 100 gr. Partition. "

Yeah - but you and your buddies are nuts about the 6mm Rem. I think you'd take it for grizzly!

Thanks for the good info guys. I'm thinking that my little .25-06 has a lot more hunting ahead of it. Another 20 years or so I hope!

+ 1 LOL

I know a 300 H & H will handle sheep and goats well and I have recently invested time and money into a 280 AI, which I believe will work even better than the 300 H & H

Time will tell

Best of luck to you on your hunt

Aleena,

Your 280AI will serve you very well with sheep. I do believe the 7mm calibre is excellent for this size game.

Yeah, that danged 280 should get it done.

Don't tell David though! I know he'll have something to say!

Scotty,
I got your back on the 7mm. My vote goes for .280/.280AI or, of course, .270Win. Jack O'Connor put the hurt on a lot of sheep with his Biesen .270 spitting 130gr Noslers!
Joe

Sir Jack :) really knew his rifle.
He never over extended the calibers capabilities!
The 280 AI is something that really intrigues me
Blessings,

Dan

Hard to beat a 280 Remington or 280 AI. Man those two both are great. Nothing wrong either with a 165 gr. AccuBond out of a 30-06 at 2940 fps!

4x Leupold on my Ruger #1B 3-shots at 100 yards. Next target to the right is one shot fired after I made scope adjustment. Hit right exactly where I like to be at 100 yards. 30-06 seems to shoot pretty well!

Scotty here is my buddies 300 WSM Model 70 after Mrs. Rasmussen worked her magic on it!

Nice sheep rifle!

I like it a bunch David. I would like to do some stocks up with the info you gave me when I can. for now, I am held up on doing much else but putting glass on my current ones!

That is certainly fine work she performed on the stock, David. The 30-06 loaded with 165 grain bullets will perform magic on animals. As your group demonstrates, accuracy is not in short supply for many of these loads.
