Last year I had the hankering to use a different (portable) set up for hunting with my Contender pistol. Never found anything that was portable and SOLID. Anyone with ideas/experience with what works well?

Well,,,,,,portability and solid don't come easy as I have found, or rather it depends on what you call portable.
I normally hunt with x-stix and for sometimes expected longer shots, I will use 2 sets. One under the gun, and one under my shooting wrist.
Otherwise I bought this chair which breaks down, and built a pistol rest for it. It pivots 360 degress and I also added another leg that comes down from the "neck" of the rest to the ground which helped alot on PD's beyond 300 yds.(son checking it out)

otherwise this is portable bench I set up with a blind around it. it also pivots 360 degrees. although I use it with bags rather than the machine rest if hunting from a blind with it....As you might imagine, it isn't for alot of senarios, but great for PD's as is.

Unfortunately I do not have any pics of it but I built a portable bench rest for a shooting buddy of mine. For the base we used a Camera Tripod that easily collapses to fit into a back pack. I removed the camera mount from the tripod and JB Welded a length of 1/2" threaded rod into the center tube of the tripod.

For the top I used a piece of 5/8" thick plastic sheet material cut into a circle (12" ot 13" if I remember right). There is a hole drilled in the center to allow the threaded rod to protrude through the plastic disc. The Plastic disc is then secured with a wing nut.

My buddy carries it in a small day pack and the main purpose was for calling Coyotes with his Contenders and Encores. It was designed so the Contender or Encore with a BR Length Harris Bipod can be set on top of this portable rest.

Believe it or not but set up properly from a sitting position it is actually more stable that you'd think.

PS over on another forum I saw a portable table a guy built out of a rectangular piece of plywood and used two RIGID Harris Bipods for the legs to hold it. he then rested his Speciality Pistols on top of this mini bench with a Harris BR Length Bipod.

While I have not hunted with the Tripod Rest we made for my buddy, I have shot off of it a few times shooting at dirt clods and things. Yes it does work and is actually more stable than you'd think.

I looked over at Handgun Hunter Magazine for a photo of the rectangular mini bench with the Harris Rigid Bipods for legs but was unable to find it.

Now that I think about it there was a guy on Speciality Pistols that built a portable rest out of a camera tripod a few years back when I first posted of the one I built for my buddy.

My boss told me I could use our surveyor tripod. It is set up with a small plywood top so it can be used to put laptops on it for some of the work we do. I would guess it weighs less than 10 pounds total. Solid as can be. But I am still on the hunt for something a little lighter.
