I have a Buck Lite knife and like it size and sharpness of it but I am looking for more. I would like a new knife that has a few different features ranked in order of desire.

1) Blaze orange handle-I am always looking for the black handled one while working on a deer
2) A gut hook. I think I would like to try one
3) If an option, I would like a fixed blade not a folding knife. (this is not required)

I see that Gerber makes one like this but am looking for other options, so if you know of one, please let me know.

I bought a 35.00 Buck folding knife from Wal Mart (Made in USA). 4.5/5" blade and excellent steel. Sharp enough to skin and quarter a whole elk. Very happy with it. Lots of good knives, Benchmade makes a knife called the Mountain Hunter. Almost bought it too, but the old Buck works nicely.

I don't carry mass produced knives.
If it were me I'd be looking at some of the custom makers and be willing to wait. Here's a pic of my EDC by Erik Fritz.

Go to www.cutco-online.com and look up #5717H It is exactly what you want. Orange rubble handle, 4 3/8" fixed blade with gut hook. Get the Double-D edge. It is serrated and VERY SHARP and it really holds it's edge. I have used the Cutco knives for years and I can completely cut up at least 25 deer before I can tell that the blade is starting to not be scalpel sharp. This knife comes with a very good Leather Sheath with a plastic liner to keep it from cutting through the sheath. It has a lifetime guarantee and if it needs sharpening you send it to Cutco in NY with a check for $5 for return postage and the turn around is quick. It is on sale for $88 right now.

If you want a gut hook, then I would look at this knife:

Dad bought me one for Christmas last year and I have used it for several animals so far this fall. It sharpens easily, does a great job, and with the rubberized handle doesn't slip in your hand. The pivot point has a lock, so you don't have to worry about the blade moving while using it. It will also clean up easily. I just sharpened mine again (touched it up) to prepare for this weekend. Needless to say I have been a lot more impressed than I thought I would be.

Having said that, this is my new favorite tool:

http://www.havalon.com/piranta-edge-ski ... 0edge.html

If you don't cut open a sternum or a pelvis you could use it for field dressing, but the Viscera above is my field knife. The Piranta is great for trimming and skinning. Both are now in my backpack.

I hope that helps.

Ditto!, I've been using Cutco for years and though they are more expensive than some of the other brands i think it's well worth it.

One more question about the gut hook. Do I need one? I have always used my fingers to make a V and then follow them up the belly to the chest cavity.

This knife will only be used for field dressing deer.

WT, this is the knife I just picked up.

Seems very good for a hunting knife. I would also suggest a Havalon Pirahna as well. Very light, easy to swap blades and a good knife to have in your pack.
Scotty, that is the first Buck knife I ever owned and I still have it But for white tail I like a smaller knife like their prince model. I can see why you like it because it will fill your hand.

I've never used one even though my knife has one.

I usually place the point of the knife right behind my index fingertip, and use the blade to zip right down the belly. I find it works a lot faster than the finger V trick.

I almost purchased this one recently:

The steel is very good, on par with the Cutco or Buck or others mentioned here, and it's hard to beat the price.

I have a few Kershaws and Gerbers that I ilke. The one small Kershaw folder I have has gutted and skinned a lot of deer. I carry one till I have sharpened it so much that the point is above the bolsters and cuts me when I reach in my pocket. That's when it finds my dresser drawer and I buy a new one. I love the drop points but as you sharpen them from use the blades get shorter and sticks above the bolsters unless you grind the back down and I don't like taking my knives to grinders for any thing.

Have you looked at Outdoor Edge Swing Blade or just their Zip Blade. While I think their std blade is soso, their Zip Blade works like a charm. Once the first incision is made it is only a couple of moves from pelvis to gullet to open everything up. I like it as well or better than my Wyoming Knife.

I own/have owned a bunch of different brand knives, including several customs made of bone/horn and Damascus steel. For hunting, I have to admit that I have used a Buck 110 folder like Scotty's for 55 years in the field. I have worn out or lost a couple of them, but for the price, they are a great utility knife.

There is that.
I thought I'd lost my knife one day, empty sheath on my belt when I reached for my blade, and was sick about it. Luckily it was on my nightstand and I had just forgotten it when I got dressed.
If I ever lose my EDC I will be heartbroken.

Vince, very nice knife. I use A Damascus made by Sean Ohare. I keep "very" close tabs on it and it holds an edge second to none.
