Who here has an M1 Garand? Where did you get it and how much did you pay for it? PLEASE POST PICS TOO! I really want to get one and have been looking around for the best place. I think I'm gonna go with the CMP. Just wanted your thoughts and pics too!

I used to shoot the DCM shoot at Camp Perry with a National Match M1 rifle. I wish I would bave bought one, very accurate out to 600 meters and it was a lot of fun.

Larry Vickers was shooting one the other day on the show Tactical Arms.
600 yards kneeling, hit the target every time.
I just wish it had been me shooting it.

Larry Vickers is a MACHINE with pretty much any hand held weapon! But then again, it was his job to know shooting like others know how to drive a trucks, or to be a farmer! He is a heckuva man. He is a magician with a 1911 45! Scotty

I have a 1954 Springfield all matching M1. It was a collector grade rifle from the DCM which is now the CMP that the fellow that I got it from purchased somewhere around 40 years ago. I have had it for about 10 years. I replaced the stock with one from Boyd's for shooting purposes because I did not want to mess up the original plus the action fit much tighter in the Boyd's stock and it shoots much more accurately in it. It shoot as accurate as the match tuned rifle I used to have. I had another M1 Garand that I got from the DCM about 30 years ago and I match tuned it and glass beaded with the help of a fellow match shooter. I used to shoot the over the course matches. I wish I would have kept that rifle. I moved away and did not have any place to shoot matches and because of life situation I needed money to pay for health insurance and sold the rifle.

When looking for a M1 you need to read up on them and know what to look for. Barrel condition, learn how to take muzzle wear and throat measurements. Many of the M1's that I see around gun shows for sale have come from the CMP as RACK GRADE rifles. These rifles are the dregs of M1 rifles. They are safe to shoot but don't expect much in the accuracy department. If you get one from the CMP get a SERVICE GRADE. Many of these have new to almost new barrels and are deemed in condition that they could be placed back into service with a GI.

If you don't reload you will need to start. Much of the surplus ammo is about gone. The M1 gas system needs ammo loaded that will give it the proper port pressure or it will cause the operation rod to bend slightly and cause excessive wear in the gas cylinder because of the piston on the operating rod not being aligned properly. It can also cause problems from slamming the action open too hard.

IMR 4895 was the powder used in military ammo. Stick with nothing much faster burning than 4895 or slower than IMR 4320 with bullets between 150 & 180 grs and use middle of the road velocities loads. 150 gr bullet around 2700 fps or 168 gr around 2600 fps works great. The only primer I would not use is a Federal. I have personally had slam fire with them because they have a thinner cup and the free floating firing pin in the M1 did slam forward in cycle and sets them off. CCI, WW or Rem have given no problems for me.

General Patton said that the M1 Garand was the best battle rifle ever made and that it was one of the chief reasons that the allies won WWII.

I have a shooting acquaintance that was deployed to the Afghan war with his USMC reserve unit and he said that he sure wished he could have had his M1 Garand with him instead of the limited range and power M-16.

The mighty 30 cal really shine when targets are further out or just hiding behind something. It is nice to be able to bust up barriers with your bullets, God bless our 240G's. Scotty
