Well, I am pretty impressed with my partners M70 300 Win Mag. He had a plain jane box of 150gr Power Points in order to break in the barrel. He has never shot a 300WM, so his first group was a little large, in the 3" range. He has a 4.5x14 VX3 in Leupold Mounts on the rifle. After settling down, he proceeded to shoot between 3/4" to 1.5" groups. We were only shooting three shot groups, and letting the barrel cool alot. I also ran them over the chrono and we were getting between 3275 and 3325 out of them! They are smoking out of that 26" barrel and really, plenty accurate for any deer hunting I would ever do.

I did take him to the local gun/reloading store and we got a box of 200gr PT's, 1 LB of RL25 and a S&W 629 (another story), and a Dewey one piece rod and some good cleaning stuff. Anyhow, here is the target we used. Almost the entire box is on the one target. I apologize for it looking confusing, but we were adjusting the scope for a decent zero also.

We also put three rounds of 180gr BST Win Supreme through it. I had a box left over from when I used to shoot it and it went into about 1.25". Overall, I think it is an awesome rifle and will turn out to be really incredible. Hoping for 2900 out of the 200gr Partitions. It is going to be his do it all load! Scotty

It looks as if he got a shooter in that rifle. I don't believe he'll have any trouble achieving 2900 out of a 26 inch barrel.

Scotty,

Try the following load....

300 Win Mag
180 gr bullet
75.0 grs RL 22
Federal GM215M primer

This load shot well under MOA in 3 different rifles. Several others here have had similar results.
As for the bullet, I have used 180 gr PT, AB and Sierra Pro Hunter. All went under MOA.

Yes indeed, a quality .300 Win mag, good 180's and RL-22 is a mighty fine combination!

Beautiful rifle. I know what you mean when you say its almost to pretty to take it out hunting. I think I'm gonna buy an HS precision stock for my 264 for that reason, dont wanna mess up that purdy looking wood!

As others have mentioned, I also have had very good luck with 180s and RL22 at 75-75.5g usually. Usually good for 3000fps and well under MOA out of a few different 300's that I load for, bullets used are NBT's and SBT's.

Right now he is loaded up with 200gr PT's and RL25. Once we get to the range, we will see what it does for speed and accuracy. If they aren't where they should be, I will drop back to RL22 and give it another go. I am pretty sure either of those two will work and give him what he wants. I like the heavier 200's in the Win Mag. It has the capacity to push them pretty fast and since he has a 26" tube he might as well take advantage of it!

If it doesn't like the 200's, I will drop to 180gr PT's or Accubonds and give it another go. I am pretty sure it will be good though. Seems pretty consistent for a brand new barrel and new shooter. Scotty

Scotty that looks awesome. Not bad for a first time shooter, new rifle, and breaking it in! You sure are making it hard for me.......
David.

Scotty - a buddy of mine (a game warden believe it or not) owns one hunting rifle - a Win Model 70 in .300 Win mag. He just shoots everything with a 180 grain bullet. Used to use 165's I loaded for him, but he blew too many parts off mule deer with it... Went to the 180's and pretty much everything has fallen easily.

His wife bought him that rifle about 15 years ago for Christmas one year. He got rid of all his other rifles after trying it on one bear - that he killed with his second shot at (gulp) just over 600 yards... Big ol' 400 pound boar. Smelled nasty too. The bear that is. The rifle is great.

Good rifle and like POP said, you will get there. Just some work and being patient and you will get what you are looking for. 300Win Mag in mod 70 super grade is one cool rifle.

I'm not up on my 300 WM stats, but that seems pretty dang impressive FPS! Looks like a bit of load work and it could really shoot! I love the 26" tubes on that belted mag family.

Jake, I think the 300 Win Mag and WBY are both some really outstanding calibers. Really fit well for an all arounder. They are flat to long range, hit with heavy bullets, and the average guy can handle the recoil pretty easily with a little bit of practice. You are right about the 26" tubes. They really make them sing. Scotty
