A Grandfather gave his 14 year old grandson a muzzle loader here in my town. I don't know if he taught him proper loading or not or the grandson did like a lot of kids do that don't understand that you can really get hurt experimenting. The kid went out by himself and used smokeless powder to load it up. The rifle blew up and sent the breach plug straight back through his head killing him.
Make sure you teach people to use the correct powder.

Terrible accident.
Being a State qualified Hunter Safety Instructor, we really stress safety with black powder. We make it very clear that smokeless powder can not be used in a muzzle loader.

Tragic accident that needed never happen. It is always possible that the young fellow wanted to see what would happen. The sense of danger is often absent in us when we are young. I doubt that any instructor would ever fail to stress safety in this issue, but there are always a percentage that ask "I wonder what if...?"
