I have always wanted one of these and I don't know why I think they just look cool. Now have a chance to buy one but I need a little enabling for a lack of better terms. Now I have enough rifles on hand to do the job from squirrels to elephant so I'm not going to be filling a cartridge niche. I have a chance to buy a 243, 7-08, a 308 win, 30-06 or a 6.5 Swede.
All are in the ruger 77 rsi ( which concerns me as far as accuracy goes) the 30-06 is a beautiful CZ with a 20.5 inch barrel. Of course that's a long action and in my mind Mannlicher should be a short action but being a cc probably means it's going to shoot better than all the other ones probably
What say you? I'm not really worried about this but which one of the three to be more efficient from an 18 and a half inch barrel.

I've liked this Springfield 30-06 my entire life. It was Dad's favorite rifle, built by his father while Dad was still at sea in the Navy for a couple of years after WWII. I haven't shot any serious groups with it recently, but it always did pretty well. I got that old 2-7x Redfield Widefield scope for Dad in the 1970's when his eyes started giving him problems with the sights. It hasn't been hunted with very much, but I hope to change that in the next few years. I do like the full-length stocks. Trying to remember - this might have a 22" barrel.

I’d have to agree with JD. A short case design would help, I even have a 18.5” 308 that shoots way out there with 169 SMK’s behind H4895. Same for the older 168’s but they don’t do well past 800 yards. This is my second SBR at 18.5” and it’s been my favorite ever since.

That said, me personally I like seeing them in the European cartridges that they came in originally…. Or close to it. But I also would take into consideration the bore diameter with the diameter of the barrel.

These are thin barrels, and for me I wanted something that still had some metal around the muzzle end.

Besides, I’ve always liked the Swede and that it was an accurate cartridge if assembled correctly.

Nothing wrong with having a ‘08 case of some kind, but I just think the 6.5x55 is way cooler in a Mannlicher style rifle.

I had a CZ550 chambered in 30-06. It was a mistake on my part to sell it. It wasn't a seriously accurate rifle, but it did consistenly deliver sub-MOA accuracy. I allowed myself to be swayed because it was a 20 inch barrel.

I have three Ruger M77 RSIs, all in .308 Win. I won't go into the hassle I went through to find a usable hunting load butfind one I did. It's 49.0 gr. W760 with the 165 gr. Speer Hot Core and does all of 2550 FPS at the muzzle from the 18.5" barrel. From a 22" barrel velocity is 2610 FPS . The load is an almost perfect clone of the Speer Nitrex 165 gr. Grand Slam load that was discontinued. I have taken deer from about 35 feet to 250 yards with that load and would not hesitate to use it on elk given a shot at reasonable range. Shots average about 1.5 " and once I relieved the pressure on the nose cap, I got groups closer to 1.25".

I have a Mannlicher Schoenhauer MCA dating back to the early 60's. It's in 30-06 with the double set trigger and a Pecar Berlin 4-10x scope with claw mounts. It's the half-stock, not the full-length wood. My point is, if the CZ is in good shape, I would not rule it out just because it's a long action. The M-S rifles came in several long action calibers.

While I am more than happy to "enable" you, with a "get them all" reply, and then let them sort out which is most accurate, which is most efficient, and in the end, which one you like shooting best! :devilish:
(Too bad you couldn't test fire them first!)

From a biased standpoint, I would say get the 6.5 Swede...(as I have one in a LH Steyr Mannlicher Model M Special Edition with very beautiful wood. and the 6.5x55 Swedish is an old favourite of mine).
As for accuracy, I hope to prove how it shoots very soon...hopefully on Tuesday, with the Nosler 140 gr AccuBond ammo.
I finally received my NIB Winchester 1885 Low Wall in 6.5x55 yesterday, and will be mounting the Kahles Helia 3-9x42 TDS scope in the morning, and also trying it out on Tuesday.
So after that I will be able to give you some reference as to the variance in performance between the 20" and 24" barrels thereafter.

After that, my personal bias would probably recommend the 7mm-08 and then the 308 WIn, as I too think that these would be the better options in a shorter barrel.

Too bad there isn't a 250 Savage in that Model 77 RSI option group...or I'd be recommending that after the Swede. I had one (Lipsey's Edition; SS) and it shot well. 0.421" groups at 100 yards with the Hornady 100 gr Interlock ammo at 2517 fps out of the 18 1/2" barrel. (factory spec'd at 2800 fps from a 24" barrel).
