It's not too early at all to start your 2009 hunt planning, particularly if you're putting in for any special draw hunts or planning to hunt out-of-state. My desk is covered with maps, applications, photos... It's not as fun as the actual hunt, but it's pretty darned interesting.

Hoping/planning for:

1. Spring varmint hunt
2. WA state spring bear (draw)
3. WA archery elk
4. WA high buck hunt
5. WA regular season deer & bear
6. WA doe tag (youngest son, draw)
7. Out of state mulie hunt, again (draw)

Of course I'm also putting in for WA tags for Mountain Goat, Bighorn Sheep, Moose... Hopefully a special tag for archery elk too. Most of those however, offer only a slim possibility of a draw...

Best of luck on your planned hunts too!

Guy,

I've already submitted my application for a grizzly draw this spring. I'll be buying tags in a month or so for mule deer, whitetail, elk, moose, and black bear (2). I may possibly get the opportunity to go a little further north this fall for caribou. I will put in for a limited entry draw for mountain goat. You are right that it is not as much fun to prepare, but it does have its own appeal.

Where are the goats in Washington? I would suppose the Olympic peninsula holds good goats. Are Bighorn on a draw? We may retire to Washington in a few years, and I should learn something about the hunting there.

Best of luck to you in the draws. I hope your anticipation for the hunts is fulfilled.

That sounds interesting, Russ. Where do you hunt axis in Hawaii? Are they plentiful? It will be great to hear about your hunt.

I am looking for deer this year:

Oregon blacktail deer
Colorado mule deer (draw)
Montana mule deer (draw)

I probably won't bother to apply in the California draw again.

My Colorado 2009 Big Game brochure arrived at the house today!

Guy, I'll be taking pictures and video that's for sure. Me and two other friends will be hunting the Thabazimbi district in Limpopo Province of South Africa. I'm so excited at the prospect, being this will be my first Safari. I'll be using bullet's 375 Weatherby.

DF,
Congrats on getting that hunt booked !! The Lapua isn't making the trip? You'd be able to shoot from shore line to shore line...??

Archery Big Horn Sheep ( Draw )
Rifle Deer (Draw)
Archery Cow Elk ( over the counter )
Archery Bull Elk ( Draw )
Coyotes ( Any manner of take, anytime of year )

I wish I could. I'm afraid they won't let me shoot no more than 150 yards over there.

DrMike, axis are found on Lanai and Molokai. Two of the smaller islands near Maui. The herd on Lanai is 6000 plus and there hasn't been a count on Molokai for years, but its large. On Molokai they have what they call the OHIA deer. The bucks rub against the ohia tree and the sap turns the horns orange/reddish.
Also:
Muflon in August or September if drawn.
South Afirica in middle May.

That shows my ignorance of the Islands. Sounds like a sizable herd. Good luck on your hunts.

Please post a picture of every animal that the 375Wby drops!!!!! I am so excited for you and it will be a memory of of life time for sure. God's speed and care as you embark on a trip to South Africa. I have never been to South Africa, my adventures were in Tanzania. Africa is a place one does not forget once you have been there.

A lot of exciting hunts comming up. I wish everyone well and I'm looking forward to pictures. I looked at all the African hunts at the Sportsman's expo in Sacramento and I'd sure like to go someday.
Good Hunting
Elkhunt
