I got my dad's pre-64 Marlin 30-30 out a couple of weekends ago and put some brass down the tube. I have not shot it for probably 25 years. It shot great but the trigger was H E A V Y compared to my 2.5# Sako triggers.

I told my BIL that I must have shot it 3 times for every time the bullet came out of the barrel. There was no creep but I'd squeeze and squeeze etc...sometimes backing off and starting again. I know if I shot it another 20 times or so I'd be fine, but really would like to lighten up the trigger.

So the question is can a good trigger job be done on a lever of this age?

Yes, but many Marlin shooters choose to go with the "Trigger Happy" kit from Wild West Guns in Alaska:

"A precision EDM sear and trigger that is hand polished to produce a crisp, clean 2-3 pound trigger pull on ALL Marlin centerfire lever rifles. Unique patent pending design eliminates the infamous and annoying Marlin trigger flop. Now anyone can have the crip, light trigger that has made our custom Marlin rifles well known all over the world. It's a trigger job in a package! Gunsmith fitting required. Available in Blue or Nickel."

They've done some great things with Marlin rifles, and their trigger gets good reviews. I haven't put it on my Marlin yet, but it's on the list of things to do.

I really like the Happy Trigger. Easy to install and worth the money.

Long,

The Wild West Guns Happy Trigger is what you need.
