I don't see a lot of talk here about hunting w/ military cals. I have a fondness for the 6.5x55 Swede & the .308. How about you guys?

Do 30-06 and 45/70 count? I hunt with those.

I shoot a lot of .308 but mostly through my Springfield M1a...

.30-06, 7x57 Mauser, 8 mm mauser, 8 x50 Rimmed type 45 Siamese Mauser. The 8 mm Mauser was given to me by my Grandfather (89 years old) who sporterized it for his nephew ( 83 years old) 20 some years ago. I just brought it back from Montana so I have not hunted with it yet. Everything else has been hunted with and taken deer.

Are you kiddin'? They are all over the place!

223. 308, 30-06, 7x57. 6.5 swede, 8mm mauser etc.

You did say mil calibers right? not sporterized mil rifles.

Varmints with the .223 (okay a deer once too)

Bigger stuff with: .308, .30-06, .45-70

limited handgun hunting with the .45 ACP (including another mulie)

Military cartridges seem to be pretty darned useful!

Regards, Guy

I did forget the gophers, not to be confused with golfers, with the .223.

I took my first deer with a 6.5 carcano, about 5 yrs ago took a nice 3 pt on the last day of the seaon with a 7.62x39. I am thinking of using my M1 garand for deer next year. But more than likely I will be carrying my whelen

M1 Garands and an M1a have filled our freezers many times and make great memories, plus nothing like a quick follow up shot or two when dad misses ( which aint often) !

I have an M1a Bush rifle that I have thought about taking hunting many times... i even have a 5-round magazine for it, required in Oregon, and an enlarged rear aperature and tritium front post like the SOCOM, so it's all set to go in low light. I really need to get that rifle out in the woods...

Thanks for reminding me that they aren't just for fun at the range!

Jerry, Curiosity is just knawing at me ...... why do they require a 5 shot magazine in Oregon?

270fan- Who knows why Oregon has that 5 round magazine law. Oregons got some of the most retarded laws...My winchester model 70 in 25-06 holds 5 in the mag + 1 in the chamber, does that count :) Seriously though, if you cant hit what you want in 5 shots, your probly not going to hit it anyways.

It's only semi-auto's that can only have a 5-round magazine... a bolt or lever or whatever can have as many as you want.

Do you mean we have GUN laws that are retarded? I can't think of any... machine guns are legal... there's no "assault weapon" crap... CCW permits are "shall issue".... you can carry openly, legally... you can trasport a loaded handgun anywhere you want as long as it's in plain sight (IE, doesn't need to be locked in a box)...

I think, on balance, Oregon is a very gun-friendly state.

If you mean some of our other laws, like doctor-assisted suicide and medical marijuana, well those are a different debate! One thing to keep in mind is that those laws, for instance, were created via the citizen initiative process- we the people created those laws, not our legislators! We voted for them, in the case of the suicide law, we voted for it TWICE. So if you believe in "the people" and in state's rights, you have to respect the purity of how those laws were arrived at.
