Thanks to Scotty, my grandfather and a couple of fellows from LEL, I am getting a new ( to me ) pre war model 71 Deluxe with a 20 inch barrel.

The 20 inch barrel and deluxe was of my choosing, as the deluxe comes with a couple of features I wanted that did not come on the standard model and Scotty has assured me that I will not lose anything with the 20 inch barrel. ( they were only made in 20 or 24 inch barrels )

Scotty and my grandfather have already got the load worked up for this gun and it will be my new white and brown bear gun, maybe even moose, or whatever runs in its path. I usually only hunt these animals at 50 yards or less, so the open sights are not a problem, in fact they are what I prefer. I suppose one could scope the gun but that would be sacrilegious in my way of thinking.

This gun will replace the 45/70 as my work gun along side the 7mm wsm BLR, although I will not be selling the 45/70. This gun is not being bought as a collectable but a hunting/work rifle. I have grown fond of the lever action rifles and feel the 7, 348 and 45/70 should cover a lot of ground for me.

We looked at the Wild West guns, as well as the Big Horn guns, the 358 BLR as well as a couple other old Win and Savage model lever rifles and decided on the Model 71. But the 358 BLR was in the running right up to the final decision, but since I have a BLR already, as well as a Marlin, thought I would try a Winchester.

Thanks for the assist Scotty

If at some point you decide you'd like to try a receiver/peep sight for it, many of those rifles were so equipped in the past, and it would be entirely appropriate to fit one to the big Winchester.

Guy

Mr Miner,

thank you

It has at the moment the original Bolt peep sight and the hooded integral ramp.

I do not have the gun in my hands yet, but it is exciting just knowing it will one day soon be in my hands.

Congrats on the rifle. You'll like the big 348 Winchester. For the types of hunting your doing I think you'll really like it!

What a superb acquisition, Cheyenne. I believe you'll be thrilled with this rifle and cartridge. That'll work for you.

Cheyenne,

Be who you are.
Blonde and blue eyes ain't any different than black hair and brown eyes as we all put our pants on one leg at a time.
I learned a long time ago that beauty comes from the inside and looks fade.
Merry Christmas !

Oooops sorry about that, I'm very bad with names and I apologize to my Indian Sister. Never wish to be anything more than what you are , it could be more trouble than what it's worth.

Cheyenne,

Congratulations on your M71 348 Win. Awesome rifle in a great cartridge
that will serve you well.
What bullet are you planning on using?

Jim and Charlie, thank you

Jim, the 250 gr woodleigh.

Truck Driver and Vince. Of course you are correct. But every woman who is "beautiful on the inside" has wanted to be that woman who turned every head in the bar when she walked in, just once. The other side of that I guess, is I remember in college all the guys complained that the cheerleaders only dated the athletes, so I guess it all balances out (-:

Cheyenne, it has always ben my contention that the beautiful (on the outside) people deserve one another!

Cheyenne,

Confidence and attitude turns more heads and is remembered longer.

Not speaking out of turn, I hope, but I'll bet you could turn my head. The manner in which one commands their space, especially in a lady, is what turns my head.

I have met models, actresses, singers and other various assorted fauna in my life. Most of them go on my "ignore" feature as soon as they start to speak.

Turn my head with attitude and keep it turned with knowledge. That's far more beautiful than silicone, botox, and collagen.

Gerry

I do not have the rifle yet. Please go to Guns Int--model 71-348 number 100436403. This is exactly like the rifle Scotty and my grandfather choose for me. This is not the rifle he bought, but it looks just like the one I will receive, or so I am told.

I have to go back to work and will not be able to log on for a while again, but I will be able to check your responses and have one more question, which was touched on by Mr. Miner

Scotty, Guy, Gerry, Dr Mike and anyone one else who may have or do use these sights. Would you change them ? I do not intend to change them and my grandfather has assured me that I will be fine with them, but thought I would ask. Remember shots are at 50 yards or less and on large animals such as bear, bison, moose, and muskox.

No, I would not change them - unless after trying them, some problem was revealed.

Those sights should work well. Classic!

"large animals such as bear, bison, moose, and muskox" That is so incredibly terrific! Yeah, I'm a little jealous! Photos when you can. The Model 71 propped up against a big beast would be pretty cool.

Guy

I would use peep sights (almost any make) without hesitation on that Model 71. The rifle will shine with that particular sighting system. I'm with Guy, some photos of animals with the Model 71 propped against them would be super cool.
