I'm thinking of giving one of these a whirl. I wanted a cheap beater 308 that wasn't an Axis, Edge, 710, 770, or, and I hate to say this, a Ruger American. I wanted a Marlin XS7 or Stevens 200 or a Vanguard if found cheap enough, but choices seem scarce on those. I ran across a bunch of the ATR 100s for $299-$399 and currently have a $299 version on hold while I make up my mind. Anyone have any feedback on these?

I like you hate the look of all of these cheap rifles that have came down the pike lately. Although I am afraid I have no first or second-hand experience with these rifles. I have shot the Vanguard and the Marlin XS7 in calibers other than 308 and think they are decent rifles for the money. One might also consider a Savage 116 or a Howa 1500 as these will both shoot well and are very economical rifles.

Good luck on this, a 308 is a good gun to have around.

How are things on your side of the state? Uncle Buckwheat has the shelves pretty bare in most places I have been over here in Idaho Falls.

A buddy of mine won a Mossberg ATR at a banquet (RMEF maybe?) and almost immediately broke the molded-in sling swivel. I think it was the ATR model at any rate.

He brought it to me to fix - and the injection molded stock was so flimsy, I declined to work with it. He eventually got a new laminated wood stock, from Boyds I think, so all is well.

Other than being an interesting looking design, that's about all I know about the Mossberg rifle. The molded stock did not impress me.

On the other hand, I've shot a couple, and they gave acceptable accuracy. However, for whatever you wish to take it to mean, I don't own one, and have no plans to buy one.

They did have a wood stocked version for the same price, and although I usually prefer wood, the synthetic was much lighter and like I said, I was looking for something I could give some abuse to.The one I placed on hold I inspected carefully. There were a few others and I found the one that actually had the barrel going straight down the barrel channel. I guess that alone should say something about the quality. At any rate, I had them put it back on the shelf... I think between sleeping on it and having a near unanimous thumbs down here, I came to a bit of clarity. Fotis, I did see the youth 308 you linked to, but at my size, youth size won;t fly terribly well. Additionally, I'm hoping to stay as close to or under 300 as I can. After shipping and transfer fees on the ones on GB, I might as well be looking for a sale on Vanguards. I am fairly patient, so I guess I'll put that attribute to work and keep my eyes peeled.

I have had the mossberg 100 atr for quite a few years now and I love it. I got mine at walmart as well. In fact we didnt do a break in on the rifle and to this day it is still one of the most accurate firearms we own. it is the 270 win. But the trigger is the absolute worst out there. After I got it adjusted it made a world of difference. I have also owned the marlin XS7 in the 308 win. I had to send it back to the factory and they gave me a new one back. neither of the rifles would shoot very will. I do own a few of the savage axis rifles and they are very very accurate and fun to shoot! I also owned a remington model 710 and If I can give you any advice, DO NOT GET IT. There are probably alot of people out there that have them and they are working good for them but I will never recommend them to anyone. The one I had was in the 300 win mag. The head space was way off and the bolt would spin 180 degrees in the receiver. Go for the savage and you will never look back.

Guns and Ammo gives the ATR good marks for ruggedness and plain but decent features. It has a Savage type bladed trigger and a walnut stock in the short action model. I should be good for a starter or truck gun?
