Yesterday I had an itch, so I drove up into Bill and Scottys Elk A/O. Made it just above the summit ridge guard station, most of the snow is gone. Found 30 elk, one bear a few turkey and a grocery sack of Morel mushrooms.
Found this sign along side the road, the last sentence, turn around and go back to I 84 made me laugh.

Morel mushrooms fried in butter is one of my all time favorites.
Congratulations on your find.

They were good. The elk looked healthy, winter was relatively mild, no calves yet but the grass is already belly high to a horse in places. Should be a lot of fat spikes for Bill.

Cool!
I saw a few elk Friday. They were in town under a tree in somebody's front yard. Like the elk you saw these looked pretty good.
Bill and I didn't draw a tag this year so I guess I'll have to stay home and build corrals.

That's great news. I'm putting in for my spike tag this year as well. Hoping for a two'fer with elk this fall. I've got my Wyoming cow tag. Should be able to get my Oregon tag too. Now I just need to get the time off!

Mt Emily is probably really close to my favorite spot to hunt elk. Love that country.

Are you putting in for first or second season?

2nd season. I like to really suffer when I elk hunt 8)

How could you really call it elk hunting if there wasn't a foot of wet, soggy snow, less than a 1/2 mile vis, and wind hammering around the peaks.

Might as well go golfing if you don't wanna get out in that stuff

We're putting in for second season as well. Now that I'm living just out of Pendleton I'm only an hour and a half from camp. Could mean a mid season shower:) f
From our camp down to Tollgate is about 50 minutes, any idea how far out you are?

I would be guessing but from where Bill and I camp it's about 1 hour to the top of the mountain, and about 45 mins to Tolgate. We usually camp near the Buck Creek trailhead.

If I'm in the area we will get the chance to meet up.

Perfect, I'm sure we can come up with a plan. I'll be in Alaska when the draw results are posted. Rumor has it I'll be able to send text this summer if the wind is right, should be able to work out the details.

I was through there a couple of days ago, along the freeway. The country looks good, water levels up where they should be and we saw several elk above the freeway north of La Grande. As well as Wyoming, and Oregon I am still looking at hunt opportunities in Idaho. I had some help here and also got a copy of the regs when going thru Boise, where I found a couple of more options. I am optimistic, but drawing tags is never for sure.
