My .284 build

A 7-300wm will shoot them 3200+ and that is why I was going to build one. Almost everything I build is a magnum but I happened to get a decent deal on a Rem. SS 700 in .270. I was going to trade/sell the bolt off and get a magnum but he talked me into a .284 instead. I have a 7mm barrel on order with Obermeyer that will be a 7-300wm and I just picked up a 6.5mm Rock Creek I've been thinking of doing a 6.5-300wm with.

Midway has a bunch of Rem actions. I looked the other day but its cheaper for a guy to take a cheap ADL off a retailers shelf. The mag box follower and spring is worth that much less a trigger and then sell the parts back to numrichs.

I usually try to buy the older guns with the jeweled bolt. They are much smoother actions. The down side is the barrels aren't worth near as much as a brand new one but you usually make the difference up in the price you pay for a used gun. I have a brand new SS ADL action that is rougher than a cob. It makes me want to get rid of it and pick up another older action.

That would suck to have class work and no play time on the machines.

It is, but I got myself a part-time job at a machine shop after class, so it's not to bad!

IdahoCTD,

Thanks for sharing those pics. It's cool to see how others put together the different parts to make a custom rifle; I imagine building your own is a very rewarding experience!

I'm lovin my 284 win. It's a 24" Pac Nor #4, 3 groove, 9 twist on a savage model 10. I had mine built because I had a 308 win that I wanted to do something a little different with. With the 284 win I was able to use all my original components off of the 308 and just throw on the Pac Nor prefit. Since it was a budget built that worked great. I chose a 24" bbl because I wanted to build something that was as handy on the mountainside as it was off the bench, and that was more important to me than max velocity out of the cartridge(although you sure can't complain about 60-70fps more for just a few more inches of bbl  ).

As far as the cartridge is concerned I've been very pleased with it. I'm shooting 160 ABs at 2830fps(RL-17 @50.8gr) which is a nice ballistic edge over the 308 win with same weight bullets. I recovered some from the ground at 600 yds the other day that looked great! I pushed these to 2900 (RL-17 @51.5gr) but was getting occasional pressure signs and inconsistent SDs. Since I was never intending this to be a hot rod I backed it off a bit and it is shooting great without any pressure signs. I adjusted seating depth as well which is part of why I dropped 70fps while only dropping .7 grains powder.

Good luck with yours!

I have another one with a featherweight Douglas barrel 22" long. My wife shoots it when she decides to go hunting with me.

I finally got the Greybull stock so I wanted to try it out on the .284. It's a pretty nice stock design and it fits me well. The proof will be in the groups though. I didn't get a chance to shoot it this weekend but hopefully if my wife doesn't pop or I'm bear hunting and I'll get to this coming weekend. The scope is a Leupold VariX 111 4.5x14x40 AO with a elevation turret in Talley mounts. I had a rail and medium rings on it but it made the scope too high for the stock so I ordered Talley's. It weighs 10lbs 3 oz. the way it is in the pictures. It feels lighter though. I guess I'm use to heavier rifles.

I've heard a lot of good things about the Greybull stocks. It should be fascinating to see your results from the bench.

Now you're talking. The older I get, the more I appreciate lighter calibres. I'm turning into a wuss when it comes to pulling the trigger on these big rifles.

Starting to get there all right.

Too many Bee stings!

Wow, that looks awesome Nathan.. Well built. Looking forward to hearing about how it shoots too. It doesn't look as heavy as you mentioned either, pretty well proportioned..

Damn I'm glad I don't live near you, Nathan! I would get my self in all sorts of trouble with a guy nearby who can screw a rifle together!

Nice rig. I've toyed with the idea of picking up a Greybull stock. I can order one with a longer LOP, just takes a little longer to get.

It makes it a lot easier to play with a ton of calibers.

Greybull has had some ownership issues as of late. Hopefully they get it taken care of because I'll probably buy another one after getting this one. I just don't want to wait as long as some of the people have had to recently.
