My 30-06 came home

Tom, did they put an insert into the barrel for the Whelen or is it just a different color bluing?

Charlie, no insert, it appears to be where JES recrowned. I'm guessing it's just bare metal. I wasn't too worried about it, as most of my blued barrels lose the blueing at the crown anyway.

I just need a handle for the thing and it's go time!

Were it not for the vet bill looming, I'd just grab a wood stock from ebay or wherever, OEM Winny wood, nothing special, and use that as a "place holder" till I get a better option lined up. I really wanna shoot this rifle, but the universe is telling me to wait, apparently.

The 264 will hopefully be here in a week or so, and hopefully there are no cosmic surprises there.

In the meantime, we'll have to content ourselves with your range report from that bombshell of a Super Grade. :) Best of luck with both of them!

Thanks!

Hopefully this goes smoothly with the Whelen. Here I hoped to be shooting it in a few days. Ugh.

So it goes. The episode with the dog has refocused things for me, as I was so frustrated by the rifle, and then I see him hurt real badly, and I realized the rifle is small potatoes. It'll get sorted out in due time. I'm just glad my buddy's gonna be ok.

Too bad about the hang up with the stock, hopefully it will get sorted out soon for you.

Our family first; and then our pets seem to manage to insinuate themselves into our hearts. Rifles can be replaced; there's always another one to shoot.

That is true, I think , more so as you get older and your children are on their own. Our pets are like our children only more spoiled.

Tom , there is a man that does stock work in the Harrisburg area . his name is Joel Russo . he is on the long range forum from time to time . if McMillan won't try to help , Joel could be worth a try since he is close to you . here is a link . hope things work out on both problems . Jim

I would contact him and if he can help go to his shop and view his work before I committed to have my action fitted.
It would be nice to know what action the stock was originally designed to fit or if it was a McMillan second some one bought and found it was to much work to salvage.

Jim nailed this one Tom. Russo comes pretty highly recommended around here. We have a member from WV who uses alot of his stocks on his LR rigs.

Boyds might have something to tide you over for awhile, even a nice walnut stock too..

maybe check out High Tech Specialties

they are in adamstown PA and have a stock that requires more finish work for 290 bump up to 825 and they will do the finish work.

I have yet to handle the finished product but seemed light enough when I held the 280ai work in progress in may

Adamstown is about 30 min from me, lol.

With the dog getting tore up, I don't know what the vet's bill is gonna be, but two layers of subcutaneous stitches and a layer of staples, I'm guessing his vet bill will rival the Supergrade's purchase price. I don't see a high dollar stock in the near future, unfortunately.

If I can resurrect the McMillan, that's how we'll go, but if not, I may have to find a cost-effective wood stock to hold it over till I can get good synthetic on it. That rifle is intended to be an all-weather thumper, so I'd like to have it in a tough stock.

Just got off the phone with McMillan. SUPER nice and helpful. The guy I talked to told me to ship him the rifle and stock, and they'd look at it. I asked if there was a charge I would incur, and he said they would call before doing anything, but I doesn't think there will be any cost. He's scratching his head over this one, too. He really wants to see it to see what happened.

So....maybe this will just cost me some more patience.

Good deal Tom.
Hope it all works out for you.

Load development should be a snap with the Whelen, they are easy to work with and are usually very accurate. Start out with RL 15 and you should be done pretty quick. :)

I'd love to start out with RL15....but I'd have to FIND some RL15 to do that!

I have 4320, which also comes highly recommended. We'll see how that goes and adjust accordingly.

I'll guess it'll be at least a couple more weeks till I can shoot it, depending on what McMillan says when it all gets there.

Tom, that is great that McMillan is going to step up to the plate. That is great customer service, especially right now as they are so busy.
Look forward to your future posts and photos. I really believe that you will find the 35 Whelen a dream to load for & shoot

Blessings,
Dan

I couldn't agree with you more Mike. My Lab layed on the floor in my basement with me sharing body heat while I waited for help to arrive when I broke my ankle. He's never more than a couple of feet away and most times closer when I'm sitting still.
I wouldn't begrudge him a few dollars to keep him in good health and pain free.
My family is grown and making a life for themselves but they know I'm always there for them if they need me.
