I took my very first buck with an old Carcano carbine in 6.5x52 , almost 20 yrs ago, I am thinking for my 34 birth day I need a sporting rifle in a 264 caliber. I might need one if I ever actually draw an antelope tag and be a nice back up to my whelen. I always thought a 6.5-06 would be awesome but I don't have the money to have a custom rifled made. So that pretty much leaves me with the 260 or a 264 wm. I see rem is making a cdl in 264 for '08. I would like a light rifle since I do a lot of walking. Must of my hunting is in So. Oregon and I stalk up close to game. Give me your opinions and suggestions!

The 26 cals are flat shooting calibers. I would think the 260 Rem would be good for 300 yds easy and the 264 Win Mag to 500 yds +.
The advantage of the 264 Win Mag is that it can shoot flat and hit hard.
And you don't have to load it full throttle for up close or target shooting.

That Ruger and Tikka sure do look nice!!

You can get a semi-custom T/C Encore at a decent price, $325 for the frame and furniture plus about $400 for a Match Grade Macine barrel. Nice and light plus you can have a 26" barrel and still come up shorter in O.A.L. length then a bolt action with a 24" barrel.

Anohter idea and one I am thinking about doing is buying a Stevens 200 (the old version of the Savage 10) You can buy a custom barrel from EABCO http://www.eabco.com/savagebarrels.htm in .260rem, 6.5X47 Lapua or 6.5X284. The Stevens rifles can be found for $250 and the EABCO barrels are $289. Throw in a decent Boyd's or Hogue stock and a Timney trigger and you be set with a homebrew custom gun for less then $600.

I love the savage idea!

RR,

I shot my first deer with a M94 Swede in 6.5X55, and years later I had a 6.5-'06 built. You are correct about it being an excellent cartridge.

I would look pretty hard at the Tikka 6.5X55 as the most rifle for the $ in .264 available from a factory today.

The Savage change barrel idea is great too, and there are folks who specialize in providing barrels in whatever cartridge you like.

Anything in 260 remington gets my vote. This little cartridge delviers a pretty good death blow seems to hit and kill much quicker than the ballistic tables suggest. Helps the bullet placement since it is in a super light rifle with little kick. I use the 140 factory corelokts or 130 AccuBond. I will never be without a 260 remington in my arsenal.

The 260 comes very close to the 25-06. 100 grain Partitions at 3300 fps.

The 6.5mm idea is great. The high sectional density of the caliber brings a bit more hitting power to the field than I expected since it is carrying the weight of rnds a caliber or two larger(.277", .284") with 130grn & 140grn bullets. I was quite surprised at the damage it did the first time I opened up a deer that had been hit with my 264 win. It was similar or worse than a 7mm Rem Mag, damage wise. The 264 win is an awesome round, but the 260 is a very effecient round as well, and the swede is a well loved rnd wherever it sees use also. I imagine that the swede would be just a touch more powerful than your carcanno rifle. Nosler has quite a comprehensive hunting bullet selection for the 6.5mm calibers. Have fun shopping around for the 6.5mm.

Pop,

I have some of those 100 gr NPs planned for my 6.5-'06 too. The manual shows 3,425 fps MV for them.

see whats in the pawn shops and sportsmanwarehouse in medford have in stock. with this weather its not like anything else is going on. a little early for winter steelhead, plus the rogue is probably blown out, I don't want to set out a trapline with all the snow that is prodicted for our area the next week and I have not had much luck predator calling, just to much snow up in the mountains. So i figure its time to go gun shopping and maybe do some reloading. maybe I will find a nice used rifle like a 700 or 7 in 260, a ruger in 260 or 65x55 or a 70 featherwieght in 6.5. I plan to look at sportsmans I know they have a cz in 6.5x55.

Rogue River,

I have relatives in Grants Pass, Glendale and Roseburg, and I want to get up there and hunt blacktail one of these years.

I toured all the Grants Pass gunshops on one trip there. ;)

Also John Barsness posted on the 24 HR Campfire that he has a 6.5-'06 now, so you can expect an article from him in the Wolfe Magazines. I recommended he try MRP.

there is great blacktail hunting in SO. OR. alot of boone and crockets come from this area. I have a friend that guides for Blacktail, and he lets me hunt on his property, but I cant take any trophy bucks and I can't hunt when clients hunt, since they make him money. I have seen some huge 3 to 5 points that I wanted to shoot so bad ,but couldn't. whats funny this past year alot of his clients passed on huge 3 points and took little four points just to get a four point. I got a nice fork by 3 point w/ eye guards in the sikiyou national mounument- public land it was one of the largest bodied blacktails I have ever taken, this back has on its way down on horn growth. if I had to estimate i would guess it weighed in the 150 to 175 category which is good size for a backtail.

there are also to many bears and cougars eating the blacktails
