Well Not really, but if it did I would be very under insured on my firearms. Apparently Home owners insureance only covers up to so much ($3,000 in this case) for firearms. If you want more than that insured you have to have an additional policy :?

Do you guys insure your firearms?

If not, and only had $3,000 to refill your safe, How would you do it?

Hey, man, I was all prepared to commiserate.

My firearms are insured. I likely wouldn't attempt to replace all of them, as some are essentially irreplaceable without considerable effort.

Yeah, I might of been able to title it a bit better, but I was in a bit of shock when I found out how under insured I was.

I am in the same shape Jake. Had to add a little to my Rental policy in order to cover them. Didn't cost much extra either. My house I own in NC had to have a separate policy for the firearms. I did 15K I think. All I know is I would likely cry pretty loud even with the insurance!

3k might just cover the reloading supplies in, powder, bullets, and primers alone.

MIGHT! Yeah, that would send me back to crying!

Any gun owner needs to consider this, for sure. I have an additional rider on my homeowners policy (covers up to $5k total, $2500 max per article) but I'm in the process of upgrading that to a separate policy with higher coverage limits. It's an issue for any hobby ownership. A buddy of mine has coverage for his model trains ($10k and then some...) and another carries specific coverage for auto parts and assemblies in his 4000 square foot "barn" where he builds hot rods and such. I think he carries about $1Million in loss coverage, but he's got some high dollar stuff in that barn. Get good coverage, have it explained well by your agent or underwriter, and re-evaluate every few years.

Yup! same here. I'm just talking to my buddy, who is my agent also, to have a separate coverage for my firearms and my wife's Jewelry.

90% of my firearms were my father's. He passed away from cancer when i was only 19. Ten million dollars couldn't replace those guns in my opinion, let alone $3,000!

Just for the sake of the thread, the ones i charish the most are:
Rem700 257 Rob
Rem700 280 rem
Rem700 30-06
Benelli SBE
Mossberg 835 3 1/2 Mag Original low serial #
Revelation 20ga single shot (Dad's first shotgun)
Marlin 39A
Savage 99 300 SAV

That would cover some of mine also...some!

Don't rely on the insurance alone! We all should have a good fire rated safe. Make sure it has the new expanding door gaskets it'll protect from smoke damage. Fire gasses are highly caustic and will ruin the finish on a gun even if the fire doesn't get it.
If I only had 3k to work with I'd get two Mod 70 Sporters with VX3s. Probably in .243 and 300WSM with 3.5x10x40mm with the B&C reticle.

I am going to change insurace companies and will be looking into this.

In the meantine, I would take the 3K, hit up Fotis on a collection and take advantage of the FDPP.

I added everything up today, I would have been in big trouble if something happened. I'll be checking in with my insurance gal tomorrow!

Right now if I had to do it with $3K, I would go with a .243 win topped with a Viper HS and a 7 mag, or 280 AI with a VX3 3.5-10x40.

Something that is good to do to keep track of your rifles is to photograph them and list make, model, caliber, and serial number along with the scope and serial number on it. I have a really neat and simple photo-template that you use. You can put your personal information on top of the page in a block. There is a location for 6 photographs in 6 boxes, and 6 spaces below each block for the rifle description. You just save page one when it is full to your desktop and then later to G drive, your file, or maybe a CD or all the above. Once that is done and page one is full, page two is simple, From your stored photo's on your computer that you have taken, then put those in the same boxes over the top of the existing photo's, and then just delete the identification information and list the correct data for the next rifle, spotting scope, bow, or whatever valuable it is. When six items are listed, just save that page and go to the next one.

You click on the box where you want the picture to go, then go to your desktop and left click the picture you want, drag it over to the box you want to put it in, and then release the left side of the mouse and the new picture will replace the one that had been there. The pictures stay the size of the block and while not huge will be plenty to identify your property no matter what it is. I just did this with all my rifles, my spotting scope, binoculars, pistols, expensive knives, and other items. I then copied these to a pdf on the computer and I sent the insurance the new updated list of valuables to add to the policy, and so they had it as well as me having a record of what I have. If I lose mine, one would hope they would be able to find your list in their policy file of yours.

So this is the deal, I have this photo-template that it simple to use. I tried to paste it on photobucket so I might be able to get it here for everyone to see and to use, but I was not able to do that. Me and computers have a hate hate relationship. If one of you guys know how to put this on here so it could be opened and used by anyone on this site, it really works sweet and I would e-mail this template to you. If that does not work, it's simple to shoot me your e-mail address and I will forward this template to you if anyone would be so inclined.

That sounds like a really neat concept, David. I hope you sort it out.

David, will you forward your template along. I have been just taking pictures of the rifle, scope and SN's. Your template sounds much better.
