Just got back from shooting today. Mostly break in and boresighting and fireforming for a bunch of different rifles. I had one really good surprise though. My new to me 300RUM Mod. 70 shot some tight groups when I was sighting her in. They were only two shot groups but I do that alot when I'm sighting in, especially when the rifle starts grouping right away. The load was a medium load out of Nosler #6. 96gr Retumbo, 180grNBT, Fed215m loaded to magazine length of 3.620. No chrono out with me today but the book say it should be 3200+FPS. Nice surprise!

A little bit crazy that 96 grains of Retumbo is a "medium" load!

I'm not surprised that the .300 RUM shot well - mine always did, and I found others that settled on that cartridge as their long-range hunting cartridge. It can be not only powerful, but amazingly accurate!

Yours apparently is good to go in both departments. Congrats!

Comforting when out of the gate you witness consistency. It will be all the more interesting as you work up a load; I have no doubt that it will be most gratifying.

That's always a gratifying surprise!!! My .280AI is doing that kinda stuff with different charges. During my pressure check loads. And has already shot multiple 1" groups with 4 different shooters and 4 different bullets without having a set of equal charges yet. Can't wait until next week. Especially when my chrony shows up and I can put some hard numbers up!!

Not too bad! You should max out about 98 gr or so.

Scott,

Nice! You have a shooter for sure.

Scott did you do anything to this rifle before you started? Meaning, bedding, trigger, etc?

That thing is ready to hunt as is as far as I am concerned. I bet Brian is going to get a little nutty when he see's this. That thing is drilling them right from the get go! What a hammer it is.

Long live the M70!

Kurt, when are you firing yours up?!!!

Scotty,
All I've done to the gun is mount the scope and check the torque on the action screws. Some times it's better to be lucky than good. I do want to bed the action and pillar the screws. Over the long term I feel you get more consistant performance out of a wood stock that way. Especially if you hunt in any inclement weather. I can't wait to develop a 200gr AccuBond load.

NICE! That rifle has to make you smile. I agree, pillars and glass will make it about as consistent as it gets, plus, you never have to worrying about over torquing it!

I am looking forward to your 200 AB load as well. Can't wait to see how Brian's shoots as well. You guys have some serious hammers for sure.

Looks like a good start. I have a good 180AB load for my 300, but it's my back up load. The 200AB is my primary.

Here's my 180AB recipe:

Rem brass trimmed to 2.83"
Fed GM215M
98.5gn of Retumbo
OAL - 3.635"

Sorry, I don't have any chrono info for this, but FWIW, 95gn of Retumbo pushes a 200AB at 3137 FPS.

Scott.

Shoot 3 3 shot groups at 300 and see if she holds.

I dunno, Scotty. Time and priorities. Looks like this Kali gig is never going to end.

Well, that should keep you in powder and bullets at least!

If you want, send it over, I will "hold it" for you!

Gimme a yell when you get back. We may be able to work something out...

I have a small problem with my M70 300 RUM. Got the Badger Ordnance LA 20 MOA mount and one of the screw holes didn't line up. Called Badger and they said they don't make one that fits my rifle. They did say the mount is strong enough with the three screws that fit my action and it would hold? I would rather find a mount that works. Brownells has one that looks like it will fit. Looks like its listed as a Mauser 98 mount and not the M70? http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=2378 ... SCOPE-BASE

Try Leupold.

Brian,
I learned the same lesson, the M70 RUM actions take bases drilled for a "300 H&H magnum" action. The hole spacing on the rear bases are closer together. I got lucky and had a set of leupy bases in my drawer. Let me know if you find a 20moa rail base.
