My son James is having a good year. He shot a 5x5 Whitetail on Sat and then the day before Thanksgiving we went out to see if he could find a elk for his cow tag. We didn't get 1/4 mile past the gate and there they were. About a dozen or so 200 yds up the ridge in an old clearcut. He got down on one knee and shot the "right" one. We talked about the differences all season on what a big cow might look like compared to yearlings and calfs.
He waited for her to stop and he shot. You could see she was hit good and she went about 20 yds and stopped again. He shot and she came crashing down the hill side for twenty feet in the brush. He was using a Savage 16 in a 300WSM w/ 180PT. Two entry holes about 1" apart above the "elbow" into the shoulder and top of the heart.
Forgot to get pics until we got her down to the trail and tied getting ready to dress her out.

Congratulations to your son for a great shot, and congratulations to you for taking time to teach him how to shoot. The touch about forgetting to take pictures until she was tied up is such a realistic touch. It speaks of his excitement at getting the elk and of your excitement for him. Great account of a most meaningful hunt. Thanks for permitting us to enter into your excitement.

Congratulations to the both of you. The memories will last a life time.

Looks like it was a fantastic day. Good shooting by your son. Getting an elk so close to the truck, or in a spot that is easy to get them out we call "cashing in a coupon"! You might get two or three elk now with a lot of sweat equity before he's able to cash in a coupon again. You should be very proud of the young man. That cow will be good eating!! :)

Wow! Congratulations to both of you! Too cool. That ought to fill the freezer - and it seems he did a fine job of shooting the elk too! Excellent!

Congrats to your son and you. Great story. Looks like your son is a heckuva shooter. I have seen grown men that can't shoot well while kneeling. He looks like a very happy hunter. Scotty

Wow, how cool is that. Congratulations again. What an excting thing for both of you.
