Last trip to the range today, mostly for a confidence - builder. My son and I took our rifles out and shot them at 100, 200 and 300 yards. Only a few shots, just to check the zeros prior to the bear hunt. I think that if we see a bear, ol' Yogi may well be in deep trouble.
John was pleased to go set out the targets. He got to drive the Jeep! Everybody likes to drive the Jeep.
He does most of his shooting afield with the tall Harris bipod, so that's what he used today. It's worked out real well for him. The Model of 1917 .30-06 is nicely set up with a B&C stock, Timney trigger and a 6x Leupold. The barrel has been bobbed to 21" and the 165's exit the stubby barrel at about 2750 fps.
I had the single shot Ruger Number One. Fired it from prone, unsupported, only the sling for stability. Did I tell you that I really like this rifle?
Results were as expected from these two proven hunting rifles. I like to use the 9" paper plate as a standard target at many ranges. I figure if I can hit the paper plate, I can hit the kill zone of a game animal:

At 200 yards, John had to put up with me messing around with his windage adjustment. Yes, he had a one-inch 200 yard group going with a nearly 100 year old rifle before I grabbed it and over-adjusted the windage dial...
At 300 yards, the drop from his .30-06 was right where I expected it to be. With the .375, I learned that it was shooting flatter than expected (or maybe I muffed the shot) and it hits pretty much where the crosshairs are held. I held a little high to compensate for the drop, and it hit a little high. Go figure.
A mighty fine afternoon range trip. We waited out a brief, but intense thunderstorm before heading to the range. Sure made everything nice, with all the sandy, dusty soil watered down for us! I think we're good to go.
