Neck Sizing - Am I doing it wrong?

I have the RCBS Comp Die set for 243 Win. After I have fired the brass I have been setting the die about 1/2 - 3/4 turn short thinking I'm just sizing the neck and not bumping the shoulder. Everything loads just fine and shoots well but I see "Neck Sizing" dies for sale and wondered if I'm going about this wrong.

Often when using a standard die to neck size, at least part of the case body is also sized to some extent. That's not necessarily a bad thing.

The neck-size only dies you see for sale aren't supposed to touch anything except the neck.

You're not doing anything wrong. You will eventually have to bump the shoulder back. Your procedure is technically a partial neck size.

You can "smoke" or use a magic marker on the neck/shoulder to see how much of the neck you're re-sizing. You can also get buy tools to determine how far you are bumping back the shoulder if any at all.

I can usually see how far down the neck I'm working just from the shine left on the neck after running the die thru my brass.

I always use the Lee collet dies. You can not fubar it with them!
