I just traded my hunting buddy out of a almost new custom 700 Rem with a 27 3/4 inch Douglas barrel in 264 Win Mag. What has been your experience as to the best powder to use with a 120 gr Ballistic Tip? I will be deer hunting with the rifle.

I hope you like mush for deer meat. The 120g BT is very distructive when hitting anything above 2900 fps. Unless you are shooting at a distance where the bullet has a chance to slow down a bit or take only head/neck shots, I suggest a heavier bullet or a much better cconstructed one. YMMV.

A 140g Part or 130g AccuBond at 3100-3200 fps MV will do the job.

I know what a 120 BT will do to a deer. I shoot it in a 6.5X55 Swede at 3000 fps. There is not that much real meat on a deer's front shoulders anyway. Where I hunt the doe permits are unlimited so getting meat is not a problem. I killed 9 deer this year, 6 meat does and 3 bucks. I take the hams and back strap and my buddies dogs and cats get the front shoulders or should I say what is left of the front shoulders. Has anybody tried Retumbo powder in their 264 mag? I know H-870 was a good powder for the 264 but they don't make it anymore and Retumbo is supposed to be close to the burn rate of H-870.

70 grns of Retumbo with a 120 BT shot 0.3-0.5MOA @3265FPS out of a 26" barrel M70, very accurate load.
I switched to a 130 AB with 69 grns Retumbo @ 3300FPS, getting a little more velocity out of the heavier bullet, but I haven't shot this load enough to get it under 1 MOA, it was just 2 or 3 groups of 3 test loads and I ran out of time and summer.

The range isn't near so much fun @ -30. It hit about -38C last nite, so the only thing worth shooting at is coyotes to try to ease the strain the cold puts on the local deer herd.

I like the B-tips for accuracy purposes & the 120 would be a great deer bullet... personally I'm not much of a shoulder shooter...@ that kind of velocity behind the shoulder would creat an internal mess which I like.

Don't forget about the 140gr A-bond that will be coming out sometime in 2009.

Now for a 110gr or 115gr A-bond Nosler in thte 6.5 ???

I used the 120 BT's at long range antelope only. The 125 Partition is my favorite for everything else.

Funny,in the last 2 years I have shot 6 antelope with BT's. 5 of those had IMPACT velocities over 3000 and had NO problem with penatration wasted meat or anything else. But what ever floats your boat.

That's quite understandable as the WT deer in Canada are of much lighter construction......   , just kidding. I had trouble with'em on a few deer, but most've them were shots were I almost ran into them and shot @ close range with MV of 3265FPS and the bullets were the old "Solid Base" design in the 100ct box. I've been told the newer ones work better. Would've tried the new ones too, but the SPS had 130 AB's on for 10.90/50 awhile back and I bought about 400.....
What can I say, less money is more shooting
