Need help with damaged Rem 722 action

Over pressure round locked up the bolt, broke the extractor.

What other damage could there be?

In looking for a smith, what information should I relay to them to find someone knowledgeable?

NE Washington gunsmiths?

I use Ahlman's in Morristown, MN, I'm sure you should have qualified gunsmith's closer. But if you have to ship it doesn't matter where they are.

Lug set back is possible. If that happens you could have excessive headspace. You could also have lug galling and scarring on the bolt face. The good thing is it was probably a .223 or .308 based case on a 722. They have less surface area to apply pressure to the lugs. Kampfeld in north ID can install a M-16 extractor and true everything up.

It would pay to get the rifle checked out just to be sure. Frankly, the 700 series of Remingtons are pretty tough rifles. The extractor may be the only problem. I have a few push feed M70 Winchesters that have what appears to be an M16 extractor or one close to it. They've never given me a bit of trouble over many years so might be worth looking into.

I think a 722 extractor is one of the parts that are no longer available. You're likely gonna need an alternate extractor. I'll modify this statement, it's the extractor for a .222 that's hens teeth.

You can get the 30-06 head size extractor from Numrich Arms also.

Were it me, I would have my local smith do the Sako/M-16 extractor modification on the 722 bolt. It’s about $150-175 but it will likely not break ever again.

My smith in Bend did this last year for a relative’s Remington 700 in 6mm and it was a huge upgrade.
