Well guys I need some help. I was getting my ready to ship out my 270 WSM to PacNor to have a custom 270 WSM built, when My wife informed me that I might want to think twice about doing that because we might need the money for our first kid! I am very excited about this so that was a easy sacrifice for me to make.

Here is the problem, I have had the same guns in my safe for three or four years now and ther are a few that I could part with to pay for this project. Got the ok from the wife to sell some guns to build or get another, but can't spend more than I sell. So the way I see it is I have two options....

Option #1 I have a 22-250 with a stainless match barrel from dougless topped with a b&L 4200 6x24, a Burris Fullfield II 4.5x14, and a Winchester M70 Black shadow 270 WSM that I could sell. There is A Remington 700 CDL with a stainless fluted barrel sitting at my local shop that is looking pretty good. There is also a nother CDL there that is a fluted blued and seems to have a longer barrel, I think it is a 26". The stainless one is a 24" for sure and the blued one is longer. The wood on both of these guns I really good looking, but the stainless one Has the edge in that area. So if I sold my stuff I could buy one of these rifles, and a scope to put on my 375 R and I jocky my scopes around. Only problem with this option is do I go with the stainless or longer blued?

Option #2 I can sell my extra stuff and send my current 270 WSM off and get the barrel put on it, and MAYBE have it back for hunting season this year. I would still be short the McMillian stock that I want to complete this project, and a scope for my 375 R. I do have a 243 that I don't really shoot that I could sell as well if I had to. But was kind of thinking about saving that for building a 22-250 Ai on some day. I guess I could always get another action though.

Option #1 gets me a rifle that I can start shooting in a few weeks and get it broke in and loads worked up for durring the summer. Option #2 gets me my first custom gun but more than likely not in time to get it broke in and worked up before hunting season starts in the first of Oct.

Just looking for a sounding board so that I can get my stuff listed in the local paper and get the process started.

I am ok with selling a gun to get a gun some sre not but I would struggle with selling more than one to get one I would hate to go down in total number of guns owned,

What calibers are the remys you are looking at?

Congrats on the incoming child will it arrive this year or early next? I assume early next. If it was this year I would get the remington 700 ltd ed 257 roberts cdlsf then you would have something to hand downto the child in later years. I had a daughter last year and ma looking for the ltd ed 260 from last year to give to her when she starts hunting perfect caliber and something from the year she was born.

Good luck remeber gun money is gun money and yo dont get it back once its gone

oh and there is always time for a custom build

I would commerate the ocasion buy sending the 270 off to PacNor and keep the other guns. You could have it engraved with the conception date or the birth date of your new one. Then hand it down as a birthday present later.
If you don't get it back before hunting season you can always use a different gun. A custom rifle will definately be worth the wait and so are kids.
Ultimately it's your decision. You could always put the project on hold and not sell any guns.

Thanks Nitis, we are thinking the baby should be here around January some time. We'll know more on the 24th of this month after the first doctors appointment.

The Remingtos I'm looking at are 270 WSMs. I have a 243, and a 7mm-08 in the safe already. I think that either one of these will make a great first rifle. I know my moms 243 sure treated me well, but I was not allowed to hunt elk until I was 14, so I'm thinking the 7-08 will fit the bill for that.

well I amnot saying u r wrong but I have never seen a factory 700 in wsm with a 26 barrel other than the sps varmint not saying u are wrong just may want to double check

I thought that a 26 inch 270 WSM was odd as well, but they two guns were sitting side by side and the actions were level and the stocks were level and the fluted blued barrel stuck out about an inch and a half longer than the stainless fluted one. I didn't think, or havn't been able to find that they ever made a 26" 270 WSM. It could of been that the stainless one was a 22", but I don't believe so. I could be wrong as well. I'll stop by and take a measuring tape to it to be sure.

If it is a 26" I would get that one plus it is probably a little less money so then if you wanted you could get it teflon coated and have better protection than the ss model with a longer barrel. I have seen those cdl fluted around but cant find any info on them anywhere to see what was made how many etc they are a special run. Even cabelas has had some with synthetic stocks.

The price difference is $40 between the stainless and the blued. Both of these have pretty good looking wood stocks on them.

If I was to get it teflon coated, who does that and how much does it cost? Any body got any pics of some that they have had done and what do you think about it?

look up black ice coatings they r in utah nice guy I think its around 100 bucks and that does the bolt and action too no more oiling the gun I will look for the link when I get home

Yep, the struggle of getting the new gun with limited funds....the American experience  or at least my experience. I had a similar situation not long ago. Actually still do, except it was with a son's wedding and another son's college.

I had a great donor rifle and thought about sending it to Pac-nor or Williams Gunsite for a rebarrel in a different caliber with all the bells and whistles. I ended up getting rid of that rifle and bought a new one. The new one did not shoot up to my expectations so now it is enroute to get accurized for, to me, big dollars. For the same money I could have gone the semi-custom route.

Ah, the best laid plans of mice and men do not always work out like we think or hope.

If I were to do it all again, I would have just sent the original rifle out and had it customized to my specs.

I am not "well healed" and have to sell or save to upgrade my rifles. But if you have an itch for a custom or semi-custom rifle, from my experience, it does not ever really go away. Do what you have to do because the outcome is inevitable. :)

a little more than I said 145 but it should last a lifetime

remember ss is not totally stainless

what would look really cool is to get it coated black then have the flutes in tan and get a tan with black web stock!! remeber you dont have to get everything at once!!

Another consideration is to have a gun cera-koted. It's a tad more expensive - about $175-200 - but it's more durable than teflon coating and it offers some pretty significant advantages, from what I've seen. Teflon coating has always worn on guns I've seen it on, where cera-kote does not wear any that I've seen. If I were building anything, I'd have it cera-koted.

I called the shop today and the fluted blued CDL is a 26" 270 WSM. Had them beasure it and everything. I'm getting it, and having the action trued up. when I get it shooting great I'll send it off and get it coated. I'll keep ya posted and get some pics up when I get it!

sounds like you got a nice rifle that 26" inch tube will be great now lets work on a load for the 110 gr accubonds can you say smokin fast with that extra 2 inches

well my QL is saying hot loads should get me 3300 out of the 140 AB and 3400 out of the 130 AB. more than likely going with the 140 AB. I havn't looked at the 110 AB, I'm looking for somethign with a better BC, lots of open country here to take advantage of it.

Thinking about trying some Ramshot Magnum. I got five different loads with mag pro loaded and ready to go. Hopefully my other stuff sells quickly and I can get this rifle in the next few weeks!

Have you thought about the 130ET??? I'm getting an average velocity of 3341 (5 shots) with my 24" 270WSM. My load is:

Win brass, trimmed 2.09"
60.5gn IMR 4350
GM215M
COL: 2.88" (this is closer to the lands than my 140AB (2.875"), and I got better groups than the 140AB)

I'll bet with a 26" tube and a slower powder, 3400+ would be easy to achieve.

Well acording to the QL ballistics program; if I can get 3375 out of the 130 ET and 3275 out of the 140 AB there is not that much difference at 600 yards.

The advantage of the 140 AB - not so much
Difference in FPS is 2 more
Difference in Ft/lbs is 107 more
Difference in drop is 1.5" more

If I can't get the 140s to shoot I'll give the 130 ET a try.

Thats awesome. You will be neck and neck with a 270 WBY with the 26" tube on that rifle. I love my 279WSM. It is an excellent shooter and really is a go to rifle for me. Scotty
