Hi my nephew's wife bought him a new A-bolt with a 3200 on top. I think that she is a keeper
In a caliber I have often wondered about but have never loaded 280 Rem. So guys he needs one bullet that is going to take everything from Whitetail to Moose.
I was thinking 140gr, but need ideas and loads
I know you guys will have something for me.
Thanking you before hand for your help.

Blessings,
Dan

Dan,

You could do a whole lot worse than to load up 150 grain Partitions. For whitetail, a 140 grain AB will work just fine, and it will be enough for moose. However, the extra mass gives a measure of assurance on the bigger bodies.

Dan, kinda funny but I'm thinking of the same thing for my wife and I. Lots of good bullets out there but it would be hard to beat the 160 gr AccuBond for an all around load, mice to moose as they say. In my friends 280 we loaded 160 gr Partition Gold's with H 4350 for a bit over 2800 fps from his A Bolt he has taken little blacktails goats and a bunch of moose with them. Talked to him today he is almost out of them so we will need to work up a new load. We also tried H 4831sc but in his gun the H 4350 was a bit more accurate.

Thanks guys that is a excellent start. I will let you know how the loading goes over the next while.

Blessings,
Dan

140gr bullet and 54gr of IMR 4350 w/ CCI 200 primer............... Nuff said!
Exact same load in my 280 Remington Eagle! I used either the CCI 200 or the Federal 210 and both worked well. Great minds think alike! He better keep her for sure!

Need to correct this and make sure it reads 140 gr. Partition in front of that IMR 4350!

160 Partition over IMR 4350. I use this since you are throwing moose into the mix.

You can also load a traditional 160 cup and core sp for routine practice shooting and hunting lighter game and get very similar ballistics. This load is very efficient at taking large whitetail at tough angles in my .280. I'd have no reservations taking it after bigger game as well.

For a Whitetail cartridge, I would stick with 140 pt, 57gr H4831 WLR primer mv2940 SD 3.9

Well guys, I am going to talk with him this week and see which one he would like to use. I personally use a light bullet in my 270win as I believe that the 130gr is just meant for that caliber. But now with more powders there is alot more you can do with bullets:).
I think because he has not shot or hunted very much heavier would likely be better :)

Thanks again what a pleasure to be on a forum that is so positive & the participants are pretty intelligent too

...I'd look to the 160's, maybe even the 175's in the .280 for "One Round". I cheat & do a lot of load development w/ "cheap stuff", like Speer HotCors, Sierra Pros, Hornady Interlocks to find a rifle's "sweet spot", usually only takes a few minor adjustments, like tweeking the charge or seating depth for the "premium" bullets. I've had a couple "bad" experiences w/ light bullets @ high velocities, haven't had a heavy bullet fail. Trajectory is just a number easily fixed, 2-3" more drop @ 400-500yds. is the least of my concerns if I already know the trajectory, wind is always "TheDevil", & retained energy/ penetration isn't sumpthin I can "adjust"...

I should have also mentioned my cousin has a 280 as well and he has used the 175 gr Speer G.S. combined with RL 19 for animals from deer on up. Like Gene said a 175 gr cup and core would work great at these speeds as well and the high b.c. means they drop les at longer range than people think.

"Hi my nephew's wife bought him a new A-bolt with a 3200 on top. I think that she is a keeper."

I think you're right!

The 280 performs best with the 140 gr bullet.

When you consider all things from accuracy, trajectory, to performance 140 ...140 ...140.

If you want one round for everything I'd start with the 160 with IMR-7828SSC you can push 3k. Need more go to the 175 that's where I would look.

That is where we ended up on elk loads for my grandson, IMR 7828 SSC and 160 partitions right at 3000 fps. He uses the 140's for local blacktail deer in his .280 Rem.
