Did a little horse trading yesterday, and came home with a SS ruger hawkeye in .338 win mag.
I bought a bag of remington brass cause the brass from my old .338 did not want to chamber in the new one very well.
The rifle is prety darnewd noce, and I got lucky and found the trigger spring from a timney trigger , I bought for my MK2 Ruger RL in .257 Roberts.
With that timney spring the new ruger trigger is excelent. I boroewd a VX 2 2X7 from another rifle to test a 2X7 VX 2.
It is an excelent scope for this rifle, but if it proves itself worthy ,I might go with one of the new VX3 1.75X6s on it.
My 1st load is all ready to shoot, I wanted to use RL-19 but did not have enough on hand to give a real try.
So going through my stock of powders I seteled on a midrange powerlevel load with VN-140 under a 225 grain Acubond.
The load should be close to 2800 FPS and with the excelent BC of the bullet that might be a great load for elk if my rifle likes it.
Hoping for a chance to shoot this wendsday.

Congrats on the rifle! I have had pretty good luck with the 225 AB out of my 338 WM. RL 19 and IMR 4350 are pretty good powders for the 338. If you can get a load that shoots good between 2800 and 2850 you have one heck of an elk load indeed!

Good luck.

Congratulations on your 338 WM. RL 19 and IMR4350 are both excellent choices with the 335 gr bullets. Let us know how she shoots.

I am about to post a little bit about my new .338 over on the rifle page.

Got the V140 from your post.

Glad to say it is not near as shinny as it looks in the picture.
Out near the barrel tip , the dull gray shows better...tj3006

Good eyes guy !
I don't think I could slide it even a quarter inch either way !
But even on 7 power the eye relief is excelent ! it fits just fine The scope is a VX2 2X7.
I borowed it from my .35 whelen. After I shoot the rifle a time or 2, I will know what scope to mount on her.
A VX2 3X9 is a strong contender, but the better glass of a VX3 2.5X8 or a 1.75X6 might be better if I ever get to alaska.
I will look hard at Burris scopes now, and mabye the Ziess conquest, but in these tuff times, I like to keep my money close to home. Home is oregon, leupold Nosler uncle mikes , benchmade less schwaub.
And from my 3 monthes short of 50 years experence, those oregon companies I listed are all top notch !

Why did you go with a 338 WM and not the new 338 Ruger?

Nice Rifle!

My 338 Win load

Reloader 19 @ 75.1
FC Nickle Brass
WLR Primer
225 Nosler AccuBond

I love my .338WM I have the Ruger M77 mark II....I shot the 225 Accubonds with 72.5 grains of RL-19 pushing it down range......groups real nice!!

There are lots oof reasons why i did'nt go for the new ruger .338 RCM.
but the 2 best reasons are 1st. I bet it will die an early death and brass will be hartd to come by.
2nd the powder used by hornady to get the advertised velocity , is not available to reloaders.
I must say however, i like the stubby little powerhouse rifles, and the nice looking sights they have.
I have been shooting the .338 win for awhile now, and familiarity trumps the hype of the new cartridge.
